    So pretty
This area is just so pretty, we visited as part of a tour group on an excursion from our Scenic River Cruise . We had a local guide who told us about the history of the area & the buildings. They are jaw dropping, so old and still standing . Do visit if you get the chance .

    Photo ops. galore
We visited this lovely historic area - lots of half-timbered buildings - as part of a walking tour of Mainz. What a lovely surprise. Our guide was able to tell us about the history of the area and the buildings. Fascinating and so historic. Well worth a quick visit. Take a camera!

    Quaint, picturesque neighborhood.
A small neighborhood with timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and a feeling of medieval Germany. Great photo ops. Several shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s also pretty close walking distance to several other must-see sights of Mainz. I walked through it on the way to see St. Stephan’s Church.

This old square where there was once a spring dates back to 1329 and contains a number of interesting half timbered houses and one of the more interesting areas of the older part of Mainz and far more classy and interesting than Frankfurt ( recognizing that most was destroyed from bombing in WW 2).

While there's only a small number of half-timbered houses compared to some other German towns, what there are are nicely maintained. And as this is a pedestrianised area with shops and cafes, and is only seconds from Markplatz, it's well worth a few minutes of your time for a wander.

We went to this area as part of our Mainz walking tour. It is very worthwhile to see the half timber houses that are over 600 years old. They are simply enchanting.

Very nice area with half-timbered houses, a must see for each visitor. Peculiar athmosphere yet so ordinary, with everyday life situations and characters. A very beautiful mix!

Wow! These buildings are really something worth seeing. So many half timber houses were destroyed over the years, it’s a treat to see them whenever you can. They are so well-kept it’s hard to believe they are nearly 600 years old. If you’ve only seen replicas (like at Disney, German-themed restaurants…) then these are definitely worth a visit. You can’t tour inside, so it is a quick trip but they are off a nice little street full of shopping and cafes and not far from the cathedral, so there’s plenty to do nearby.

It doesn’t take much time, but is worth stopping by. You will already be in the area for other stops so why not take a small detour. On a slow day, there is a fountain you can sit by and eat a snack or sip a beer😀. Enjoy the view of the 500 year old structures.

This square is surrounded with half-timbered houses - as old as half a millennium!
It is so pleasant to stand in the square and to slowly look around and enjoy this place!
Every Old City walk should include this nook
