I went straight here from the Luther house, with which you can buy a shared ticket. I very much preferred looking round here to the Luther house, it was more interesting, perhaps as I knew less about Melanchthon than Luther, so I was more receptive. The tour began with a model of Melanchthon’s daughter standing over a chest of clothes such as her father might have worn, inviting us to try them on, but not to forget to close the chest afterwards. The feeling that Melanchthon was a scholar, tutor, family person, and good friend to Luther and others, permeated the museum. He seemed to be a very likeable personality, and having been given the house , stayed in Wittenberg teaching at its university for the remainder of his career. I recommend this to anyone, even if they have a limited interest in the detail of the Reformation, they could enjoy learning about life in the sixteenth century through experiencing one family’s home. Don’t miss the painted coats of arms of various of the student lodgers, or the moving account of Melanchthon’s final days.

Philipp Melanchthon was Marin Luther’s most important colleague and friend. The two reformer found the Lutheranism.[

Melanchthon was a very important theologian and leader of the Protestant Reformation, but he is less known. Nice to know this great man.

Inside the house, it is now a museum displaying the life and work of Melanchthon.
Because there are so many historic and cultural heritages in Wittenberg, this museum could be skipped if your schedule is tight.

I wish I had a small child with me to share this museum. They had special activities for kids to do and find throughout the place. I learned so much about the reformation and even Martin Luther while here. I would like to read more about Philip Melanchthon now also. A very fascinating man!

It was interesting to learn more about Melanchthon and his life. He was a very impressive and important figure who often gets overshadowed by Martin Luther’s Fame.

Phillip Melanchthon was a friend of Martin Luther but I had little knowledge about him. This museum of his house was able to convey a lot on his role in the reformation and in the region. His support of college students, his devotion to Luther ( there was a quote from Luther that he would prefer reading books by Melanchthon than his). It is sad that tour groups pass on this sight. Anyone visiting Wittenberg for the Luther sites MUST see this exhibit. The original belongings are not here but the creativity more than makes up for that. He was an amazing person and definitely worth the visit. If not convinced, if you are seeing Lutherhaus then buy the combo ticket and see this sight for lower cost. But still visit it.

The Melanchthinhaus is not too far from the Markplatz. It’s quite attractive from the outside, at least to my taste, but right next to it is a contemporary building that displays Philipp Melanchthon life and works. It’s quite comprehensive. I saw lots of manuscripts, busts, paintings and prints. For those who like research, this is the place to know more about this famous man.

When we entered in his renaissance house, we were welcomed by a nice lady. We bought our tickets and enjoyed visiting Melanchthon’s beautiful home. We even saw his study. On his desk was a 10 day testimony about how he died peacefully. This was quite moving!

Quite an informative tour!

Somewhat to our surprise, we found this more interesting that the Lutherhaus museum. Almost no one comes here. The house itself survives, but the furnishings are long gone. The minimalist contents leave much to the imagination, but anyone who has been through good art museums can fill in the details from their imagination. The combi ticket with the Lutherhaus is well worthwhile.

We visited Wittenberg purely for reformation history, Melanchthon being a significant part of this visit. Yet I was deeply disappointed and hope improvements will be made.

The new renovations are very modern, which is stark contest to Lutherhaus next door. I didn't mind the funky colours and artwork, but it was the content that disturbed me.

First, the lack of content. So many rooms were close to empty. Melanchthon was a prolific writer and there could have been plenty more to exhibit, but most have too much dead space.

Second, there was so much missing content. Melanchthon was historically known for his reformation work as theologian, however only half a room is dedicated to his works. I cannot believe this was an oversight.

Finally, the content bias. Instead of focusing on Melanchthon's theological work, there has been a focus on his educational reforms. Although this is not incorrect, it comes across as a way to sanitise his deeply Christian identity to something familial to humanism.

The reformation was a reclaiming of lost biblical spirituality which Melanchthon was central. Please do not lose what was found at such a great cost.

On the one hand it's hard to disentangle Luther from Melanchthon, on the other hand, there is so much other Luther history in Wittenberg. If you have time, do it.
