We visited St Petri as we had heard the church tower provides great views of Lubeck. When were entered we were surprised to find a great artisan market in the former church. We started a conversation with Hilde who told us the story of the church and how it was bombed out during 1942 and not restored until the 1960s. The story is tragic but the building now has many community uses. The lift up the tower is great and highly recommended. The 5 Euro price is quite reasonable. A good experience.

The viewing platform on the tower is the main attraction, for us at least, at this church. Instead of glass there is a wide grille around the windows so it is a lot easier to take photos than some other attractions. There is a lift to the top - luckily - and the staff were both lovely and spoke excellent English. The church itself is heavily restored after WW2 and seems it has yet to find a new purpose. There was some sort of art exhibit inside but it wasn't really clear what it was about.

Although this old church was destroyed during WW2, it was rebuilt in the years following the end of the war. It's destruction meant that much of the furnishings and artefacts were lost forever, even though the building was rebuilt. It is no longer a consecrated church and the building now is used to house art displays, however the tower is a great place for the visitor to Lübeck to view this beautiful city from above. The modest cost of 4€ gives access to the elevator which takes you to the top of the tower and the viewing area. There are a number of stairs which must be climbed before accessing the elevator and from the elevator to the viewing area, so it would not be suitable for a mobility challenged person. The church building is located close to the Main Street and shopping area at the entrance to Lübeck. There is a small cafe on the ground floor of the church which looks interesting, but we have not tried the food or coffee there as yet. In summary it is well worth the visit, especially on a clear day. The bells from the Cathederal sound at midday, and I found it charming to listen to them from the St. Petri tower.

If you do one thing in Lübeck, take the lift to the viewing platform at the top of the tower of this former church. The views are simply amazing and you will get a really good feel for how the old town of Lübeck is laid out.

When you walk around Lubeck, you'll see lots of wonderful architecture. For a mere three Euros, you can get to the top of this church via a lift (plus a few stairs) to see it all from above! I found that the best photographs of the city were obtained from up here. Don't miss it!

There is a lift up to the tower so there is no excuse not to go and see the amazing views of the city especially at sunset. The church itself is lovely and has a great history.

Nice and simple city view from the platform. Upper part of the tower was rebuilt after WW2. Price for adults 4€ and there is an elevator to go up so no stairs😁

Without going into the history of the building as there are sufficient online resources for that, St. Petri zu Lubeck is no longer actively used as a church and there is ongoing restoration work in progress. Notwithstanding you can visit the viewing gallery for a modest fee which is a 50 metre lift journey up from the reception and gift shop. Once you have reached the viewing gallery there is hardly a better view of Lübeck than here, giving you 360 degree panoramic views across Lübeck and the surrounding area. Apparently on a good day you can even see as far as the Baltic Sea, unfortunately for us we were there on an overcast december day so we were not blessed with such an extensive view, but nonetheless it was worth the visit.

Since we usually like to climb all the way to the top of towers, we were a little disappointed that the only way up was to buy a ticket and take the lift. But before we went to the top we had a look at the bare white-washed interior of the church bathed in bright summer sunlight. A fascinating exhibit with the intriguing name Gegenlicht (“against the light”) displayed a combination of statues by the German sculptor Hans Scheib with mythological and social aspects and paintings and collages by Robert Weber, some of which reminded us of Russian icons. We later learned that the church is now used not only as an art gallery but also as a place for public readings and concerts.

The short elevator ride 50 meters up to the top of the tower provided us then with the promised panoramic 360 degree view including a look at the contrast of roofs: a controversial department store built around ten years ago with much older and restored roofs of the surrounding area of the famous Markt plaza. Lübeck's iconic Holstentor from above looked more than a toy than the weighty imposing gate it really is.

We were lucky enough to have absolutely gorgeous weather on our day in Lübeck and thus could really enjoy the panorama – but we’d come back to St. Petri for other activities on a cloudy day too.
