We saw the exhibition “The Ernestines. A Dynasty Shapes Europe” on the last day it was open. The museum itself is very easy to access, at the bottom of the hill from the Hauptbahnhof, only a few minutes walk from the centre of town. The exhibition itself was fascinating, the family had a huge impact on Europe as a whole... More

We had assumed the exhibition would only be occupying a part of the Neues Museum but in actual fact it had taken over the whole building. For those interested in the history of royalty it is fascinating but probably best avoided otherwise.

Enjoyed the tour of The Ernestines in the City. The impact of the family on Europe and the West is impressive.

The museum (actually a Gallery in English terms) is, I am told, the work of one wealthy collector and dealer of contemporary art, who uses it to showcase the things he is currently interested in. The installation on view when I visited was not terribly engaging, being the quotidian things of the artist laid out and displayed as if they... More

The old museum is worth a visit - a smaller cousin of the Neues Museum in Berlin but without its funding and extensive collection. Entry to the Rebecca Horn installation 'Konzert fur Buchenwald' which was made in 1999 for the 'European Year of Culture' is free on the same museum ticket . It is in the old tram depot on... More
