- John BBrussels, Belgium377 contributionsFabulous castleFabulous castle in various stages of renovation. You get a good idea how parts of it might have looked and the first, garden, area with lots of running water is beautiful. Great views over the city too. And it’s free! We spent about two hours here. Very few signs, and little English explanation but very interesting placeVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 5, 2024
- Robert PasleyDerbyshire, United Kingdom16 contributionsWorth the visitMore here thank you expect from below. It was free when we went. They are still doing renovations, so not all is accessible, but there is still plenty to see and the view of AlmerĂa is very good. To see the other monument on a hill you have to go down and back up, and there will be a nice path up there at some point which they are working on. Have a mint lemonade in the restaurant near the entrance, and the food is good too.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 11, 2024
- Tracey D69 contributionsDeceptively large & impressive fortressWhat an amazing site to visit with views across this small city. The scrubby areas & lack of upkeep around the edge of the castle almost add to it's charm. Definitely worth a visit if you are in AlmeriaVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 9, 2024

The Alcazaba of AlmerĂa is an impressive historical site and a must-see when visiting the region. Here is our detailed review:
Good points :
- Rich History: The Alcazaba is one of the largest fortified complexes in Spain and is full of history. Built in the 10th century, it offers a fascinating insight into Moorish architecture and culture.
- Magnificent architecture: The site is a true architectural marvel, with its imposing walls, towers and well-kept interior gardens.
- Panoramic views: From the walls you can enjoy spectacular views of the city of AlmerĂa, the port and the Mediterranean Sea. This is a great place to take photos.
- Peaceful Gardens: The Alcazaba Gardens are a haven of peace, perfect for strolling and relaxing. They are well maintained and add a touch of greenery to the historic setting.
- Free entry: Entrance to the Alcazaba is free, making it an accessible activity for all visitors.
Points to improve :
- Signage: Signage could be improved to help visitors better understand the history and different points of interest of the site.
- Accessibility: Some parts of the Alcazaba may be difficult to access for people with reduced mobility due to stairs and paved paths.
- Limited information: Although the site is impressive, more detailed information panels or audio guides would be useful to enrich the visitor experience.
Conclusion
The Alcazaba of AlmerĂa is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture. Despite some small possible improvements, it is a magnificent place which offers a fascinating dive into Spain's Moorish past. Don't miss the opportunity to discover this historic gem and enjoy its breathtaking views.
The downside, however, remains the restoration which is not done identically. I would have preferred to pay 2 or 5€ per person so that we could have the means to restore this monument according to the rules of the art.

This reminded me of the Alhambra in Granada but on a smaller scale. A visit could take you anything from a hour to two hours depending on how quick you walk. It’s free to enter but not disabled friendly because of the steep steps you have to climb to enter. There is a free downloadable audio guide as most of the signs don’t have a English translation. In the summer months it’s advisable to take water with you as there are not many shaded areas and nowhere inside to purchase anything either. There are a couple of drinking water fountains but the water doesn’t taste the best.

Not only is it dramatic, it;s beautifult too.
The climb up is a little difficult, but we both managed it and were rewarded by amazing views of the City.
It has been beautifully restored, and digs are still going on around it. Very beautiful fountains, trees and flowers. A mini Alhambra!
Entrance is free, which is amazing.

Beautiful visit to the beautiful Alcazaba.. Here there is still some restoration work going on, but that does not detract from the beautiful surroundings inside the fort.. The entrance is free... Inside you can also buy some drinks from the vending machine which can be useful if you get thirsty... The old fort is also being excavated thoroughly, so it is also archaeologically interesting if that interests you... we really enjoyed this visit!

Beautiful fortress located above the city of Almeria. Walking there is easy. Free entrance for European residents. There are many stairs inside, so it is less suitable for people with mobility problems. Nice view over the city. Nice gardens with waters. Restoration still not completed. Drink machines did not work properly. So it is better to bring your own water.

Great place to visit with an amazing and stunning view on the city. The entrance is free of cost for EU citizens (and for no eu it should be 1.5 euro). Next Door you can find some bars but I had the impression that most of them are just trap for tourists. Probably is better to walk for a while and to reach some more authentic places in the city

We thoroughly enjoyed our free visit to the Alcazaba in Almeria. Well marked out route around and some great views over Almeria . Beautiful building and so much history. We are not sure why it was free or if it is always free. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Free entry for EU citizens. Stunning views and beautiful gardens. Not that much information around to really help you interpret the site, but just a beautiful, peace environment. I travelled before C19.

Written May 6, 2018

Merci
Written May 4, 2018
