Puerta del Puente was built in the second half of the sixteenth century, on the site of the principal former Moorish gateway into the city, which in turn had been built on the site of a Roman gate into the city. The 'Bridge Gate' is not beautiful but it dies dominate the entrance into the city when coming off the Roman Bridge. It's not a wonderous piece of architecture, but it does present a photo opportunity. There is no charge to visit it.

Cordoba was founded by the ancient Romans at the highest navigable point of the Guadalquivir River, where it was easiest to ship olive oil, wheat, and wine back to Rome. This gate is like a Triumphal Arch entering the city from the Roman Bridge. I now realize that this entrance from the 2,000-year-old bridge was the Long Bridge of Volantis in the Game of Thrones, the first of many filming locations I will see on this trip.

The present gate dates from the 16th c, built to commemorate the visit of King Philip II to the city. It was built where previous Roman gates were built, connecting to the Roman Bridge. It is presently under renovation but still largely visible.

The Puerta del Puente is a Renaissance gate in Cordoba. Built in the 16th century to commemorate a visit to the city by King Philip II, the gateway is located on the site of the previous Roman gates, linking the city with the Roman bridge and the Via August. My wife and I were part of a guided tour and appreciated the opportunity to view this interesting structure.

Although this structure is known as a Triumphal Arch, I’m not exactly sure this is true. My reasoning is as follows: Triumphal Arches were built to commemorate a victory, and Puerta del Puente simply translates to Gate of the Bridge. Hence, I think it may be exactly as the translation, a gate of a bridge. The 1000 mile long Via Augusta passed through Cordoba and it might have made good sense to have a structure that indicated the entrance to the city and actually had nothing to do with any triumph in battle. I think this current structure was built circa 1600. It’s a very elaborate structure.

Puerta del Puente
The entrance gate to the old city
This is not the gate built by the Romans but a gate built in the 16th century in honor of King Philip II.
From here cross the Guadalquivir river and overlook the old city.
It is highly recommended to come here at night, the views from the bridge and on the other side of the river are amazing.

This is the main gate you will come to after walking across the Roman Bridge and serves basically as an entry to the old town/area. It’s a very prominent site, best viewed both during the day and at night, as it’s lit up. Very challenging to get a picture of it without people as the foot traffic around here is considerable at any given time.

Back in 1572 the mayor at the time wanted the entrance gate cleaned up and beautified as it was in poor shape and not what an entrance to a city should be keeping in mind that the traffic over the Roman Bridge was major. Work started but was never completed so the King in 1912 said fix it and all the walls were torn down and what stands now was built in 1928. The result is an impressive entrance to the city.

The Puerta del Puente is an impressive gate to the Old City from the Roman Bridge. It is right next to the Mezquita-Catedral and can’t be missed.
