Although the beauty of this feature was well described in the guide books it did not prepare us for the stunning impact it made when we entered the somewhat underwhelming building itself. The interior does need to be seen to be believed as pictures cannot do it justice

Located in Macarena next to the old city gate (Arco de la Macarena), this magnificent church is best known as home to “The Virgin of Hope”. A museum (Museo de la Hermandad) adjacent to the church displays artefacts related to the 400 year history. Combine a visit to this church with a visit to the city walls (Murallas de Sevilla)... This is an important church for Seville. The Virgin of the Macarena is said to be the patron virgin of Seville, though there is competition with the Virgin of Triana (across the river), said by Seville residents to resemble the competition between the city's two football clubs, Seville FC and Real Beltis. One likes and presumably prays to one or... More

We went at the time one mass was taking place. It was offered to a group of faithful american people, who brought their own priest. It was performed in latin - really odd for me. But it was impressive. The Virgin is really nice, but for me the atmosphere was the most interesting part of the experience

This one really stand out in terms of well-kept decoration and statues. Everything is magnificently displayed. A real treat for the eyes.

Another of the many sites worth a stop. There are more attractive sites to see in this city but this is worth a visit if you are in the area.

It's worth popping into if you're in La Macarena but if you're not (it's away from the majority of tourist hotspots) I wouldn't bother going out of your way. The statue of the Lady Macarena is impressive but you can't get close enough to see the real detail. There's plenty of signs saying photography not allowed but that didn't seem... More

A small and beautiful basilica honoring the Virgin of Hope. The visit will require about 20 minutes. I would place the Seville Cathedral and the Alcazar higher on the list of priorities, but if time allows, this is a worthwhile stop.
