Stairway to heaven?

If you go here, be prepared for a real climb. Not recommended for people in bad physical shape. But nice view over the old town, once you get there.

These stairs run along some ramps that can channel water during the rain, and allow you to reach the heights of the Etxeberria Park and the Begoña area from the square below. Walk them up, or take the Lift at the Metro station (only 45 cents of €uro) and then walk down.

Visiting the old town in Bilbao we were in search of a way to get the Old Cathedral Santiago atop the town and were directed to the Plaza Unamuno and the beginning of a climb up the Mallona Stairs. I lost count of how many stairs there were and I was amazed at the locals and the age of many... More

Steep climb but great views of the city from the top and on the way up. Not great if you have a buggy or pram!

We were looking for the "Hop on, Hop off" bus stop and were in the old town. We asked a lady who very nicely in Spanish (which we don't understand) pointed the way to the steps, as it turns out the Mallona Steps. We were unaware that the steps went on and on for over 300 steps since they wind... More

We were wandering and got disoriented. This and the steps were our reward and punishment. We were glad we saw it, but would not have sought it out.

... to visit Begoña. The nicest thing is to have a view of Bilbao from upstairs. There is an old elevator, not very nice, but with a corridor that allows to have a nice view of the old city, and the river. You can also take this elevator, or the metro's one to go upstairs and use the stairs to... More
