It is a guided visit to a different cathedral, without the crowds of others, without the simultaneous development of worship... It is interesting to discover the particularities of the building, the restoration work that has been carried out and the explanation of the works. Particularly striking is the visit to the triforium and the climb to the tower. It is true that it is not a cathedral that stands out for its architecture or specific historical aspects; On the other hand, you have the possibility of taking advantage of the restoration to focus the visit from the point of view of its construction and renovation, which generates a very interesting perspective. It also has elevators, making it possible for people with reduced mobility to carry out part of the visit (excluding the clerestory for obvious reasons).

We were a group with people of all ages. The guide couldn't be heard. He was asked to speak a little louder and he felt bad and answered in bad ways. He explained unclearly. The questions didn't suit him. He made it clear to us that he had another three passes later. It was August 10 from 11:30 to 13:00

Exceptional guided visit. The cathedral continues under restoration. Unfortunately we couldn't visit the tower as no slots were left for that. From the foundatios to the roof the temple is full of beauty & surprises.

The last 9/11/2017 we went on a fantastic trip to Vitoria with our class. It was a good opportunity to ease off from exams and discover an historical and marvellous city.
The thing that most appealed to us was the ancient Cathedral. We took an english guided tour but we make out the whole visit because it was very well explained. Our guide was very kind and she led us through the foundations of the cathedral and we also had the opportunity to walk on different levels such as on the tribune and the spiral staircase.
The most interesting thing was learning the history of Vitoria and its Cathedral by mockups , which explained its construction from the first stone to its last improvements.
We really appreciated the video at the end of the visit, which showed how the cathedral decoration has been changed during the years,in a modern and digitalized way.

In conclusion, the gothic cathedral of Vitoria is a magical place where the history of this capital is captured. We think it is a must to do visiting the Cathedral due to its recent restoration and the well-adapted and explained that the guided tour was.
We also want to thank “Fundación Catedral de Santa Maria” for its huge effort on maintaining an important legacy of our history.

Lets face it, Vitoria is nice city, but not lots to do. I've been going there as an American married to a Spaniard from here for 13 years. However, I just went on a tour this last Christmas of this place since its been renovated - a MUST DO - great tour guides, super well done tour, great blend of modern with ancient - and its like you're on an architectural / restoration tour in live format - hard hats and all - you'll go places in this church you cannot go elsewhere - really, I reemphasize, make your reservations and do this tour.

Santa Maria Cathedral is located at Calle Cuchilleria, 95. Santa Maria Cathedral is also known as the Old Cathedral. The church is located in one of the highest points of the old walled city, on top of the hill. In 1200 the city was taken by the Castillian king Alfonso VIII. He was responsible for ordering the church to be built. The church construction started in 1200 and continued until the 19th century. The style is Gothic. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the bell tower was constructed. The ground plan is the Latin cross and there are three naves, with the central nave being higher than the lateral naves. There is an apse, transept, and chapels on the sides. There is a vaulted ceiling. Over the years the church developed structural problems because of its design that kept changing over the years. In 1994 the church was closed to services because it was unsafe. A restoration plan was developed between many government agencies and the church. The plan was so good that it received the prize Premio Europa Nostra 2000. The restoration process is reaching its end and it is projected that the church will be fully restored by the end of 2012.

In the meantime, there are guided visits in the Open For Works slogan. People who have called in for reservations are shown around the church by a guide who explains everything. One has to wear a hard hat to be safe while construction goes on. One is brought up to the scaffolds and shown what work has been done. The guided visit lasts an hour and one ends up at the portico of the church, which has been fully restored. The artwork and sculptures in the portico are exceptional. The central doorway is related to the life of the Virgin Mary. It treats the Ascension, Pentecost, the trip of the Apostles, and the death of the Virgin Mary. It ends with the coronation of the Virgin Mary by her Son. The tympanum shows the image of the Virgin with her Son, and this comes from the 15th century.

The author Ken Follet has given the Cathedral much publicity with his novels, World Without End and The Pillars of the Earth. Reservations for the guided visit can be made at 945-255-135.

huge and beautiful, both inside and out. Set just inside the gate of the city wall, there are benches to admire and people watch.

I went on November with my school and I didn't expect much from it, I'm usually not very fond of this cultural visits, but I was pleasantly surprised. The guided tour was excellent, the explanations of the evolution of the cathedral were very complete, as well as the ones of its history. Also they explained the reconstruction that is currently being carried out and the main reasons of it.
I shall underline the eagerness with which our guide spoke, it really showed how much she liked her job. I would definitely come again!

This is one of the best archeological tours I have ever done. You have to go with their guide but it is not to be missed. You get to see all aspects of the cathedral including its historical context. But be careful you go to the right building - we accidentally initially went to the wrong cathedral

Was recommended the tour guide by a coworker (she attended a month before)

Very good system to prebook tickets in advance (not charged at penny till you buy them in person but must do it 10-15 minutes before the tour or tickets will be release for sale). I strongly recommend prebooking your tickets specially during festivities (several customers were turned down as they were fully booked)

The Cathedral is pretty awesome itself but the restoration works they are performing, is the ice on the cake.

Well explained and illuminated. Lots of items to see and wonderful views from the Cathdral s tower

Got shocked when they informed us that the Cathedral was close in 199x to start the restoration works and still ongoing but after the visit everything make sense.

A perfect and compelling activity to do in Vitoria.
