Vara de Rey is a promenade or a large square located in Ibiza Town, the main city in the homonymous island. When I came here (in January-2023), there were a.little market with some shops. You can walk around it and see a central sculpture or go to some bars and restaurants, which almost all were closed in the low season. Nice place.

On the walk in the old town you will come across this statue impossible not to find or not to see. Around it numerous bars restaurants and souvenir shops. Stop at least for the classic ritual photos.

This formerly buzzing Paseo was the nearest thing to a city centre square but with all the traffic clogging it up, it was crying out for pedestrianisation.
Well, now it has been pedestrianised but it is not the successful transformation that we may have hoped for. Yes, it is great that there are no exhaust fumes and noisy traffic but the design has killed the atmosphere. One really stupid feature has been to remove all pavement terraces from the cafés and restaurants, repositioning their terraces as compact groups of tables and chairs in 'pens' at some distance from their venue: effectively a wide 'pavement' away. Let's hope there is a rethink on this and terraces will soon spill out from each and every venue. Likewise, the bookshop previously had a lovely, colourful array of spinners stuffed with newspapers and magazines, spilling out onto the pavement but this has been swept away to maintain the new colourless style. Even the yellow postbox has been banished and the traditional clock and thermometer which is an iconic feature of Spanish cities has been replaced with an incomprehensible tangle of tubes and panels purporting to be an architectonic feature but it seems not to fit the space and is a visual disaster... Just what is it? A cluttered excuse to display a weedy little clock and thermometer?
Worse still is that previous provision of tents for events such as the Christmas Market has been banished and it was such features as this that gave a good and lively focus to the city centre... giving it life. Life has been stamped out and there now feels as if it has no real purpose, which must be having an impact on the traders here. Normally, pedestrianisation liberates streets from the curse of traffic and liberates an area. Normally it also benefits businesses too. In this case, the opposite seems to be happening....
So, build on the traffic free zone by bringing back the lifeblood of the city... bring back the café terraces... the tent... the life...!

Waitress was not only rude but also failed to provide food and we cancelled it after half an hour. tried to say that she forgot when she clearly hadn’t. Everything about the approach was rude and her behaviour to other customers would not encourage me to go back there any time soon.

Bars de Ray is a beautiful tree lined street close to Ibiza Port. Nice restaurants, few monuments and lots of trees. Nice place to stroll around.

Interesting pedestrian precinct type of open space with the impressive monument as the centrepiece - I perhaps a few more seating areas would help?

Just under the castle and a short walk from the west end section of the harbour is this pedestrian square. There are a few shops and cafes around it. Nice place to sit and people watch (when the weather is nice). One of the best cafes to eat in is Cafe Vara de Rey, they have a nice selection of Spanish food along with the usual burger, chips etc and at a great price too. Toilets available at the back of the cafe.

My wife & I stumbled upon this monument while exploring Ibiza. This beautiful statue doesn't have much around it, so anyone without any prior knowledge of Joaquin Vara del Rey's astonishing achievements wouldn't appreciate this as much. Wished they had done more to highlight the statue and show his accomplishments to the world.
