Its a nice building to visit in the old town. Lots of fresh produce and fish to view. Perhaps i am spoilt but the Grainger Market in Newcastle is much better along with its historic architecture. If your in Las Palmas, its worth a visit. But dont make it a destination.

We visited mercado to buy some fruits. There is quite a big choice. However be ware of one department where the fruits are very beautiful, but awfully overpriced! If you get in the market from the main entrance, then this department is on the left passage, first shop to the right. The sailor is bald. On the other side, if you have a possibility to use a cooker, than you can tease yourself with marvelous fish.

Genuine old market with full range of fresh products, cafes and local produce used by the locals. We struck lucky and were there when there was a cooking demo on and the food was lovely.

A lovely local market in the beautiful Las Palmas suburb of Vegueta. Beautiful displays of fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts etc.
Prices much cheaper than in the shops.
Well worth a visit.

As tourist in Las Palmas we had an unpleasant experiance at Mercado de Vegueta the other day. We first bought a lot of cheese and ham at the store next to the market. The price was 24 Euro, which is fair.

Then we went to buy fruits and vegetables inside the market. We bought a lot of fruits and vegetables. The price was 76.07 Euro, which is not fair at all. Even in expensive Norway, even in the poshest fruit stores, the price would not be of this kind.

We where so shocked by the situation that we payed and left, after making it known that we were really surprised and disbelieveful of the setting.

But we have been thinking a lot about this, and can not in any way understand how the items we bought can have this value. We are 3 adult persons, having travelled a lot, and as we all judged the situation, there was no need to ask for the price each time we ordered tomatoes, poatoes, ananas and other fruit and vegetables.

We talked about this with our landlord and she said she has heard about the situation before, and she will now warn her guests. believe we have been tricked and are very unhappy about this.

A gem of a place to visit and take photos!

You can combine it with a stroll all around the Vegueta area, seeing the Cathedral and some very attractive streets, making a lovely half day out.

And extend it with a long lunch!

This is the "mercado de abastos" - the produce market, and is a Listed Historic Building as well as an exciting place to visit.

Custom-built as a market in the mid-19th century, it takes up a whole block. On the outside, leading off the pavement, there are bars, restaurants and little shops. Inside is the Market Hall with stalls jam-packed round the edge and in the middle.

A riot of colour, pulsating with people.

Opening hours are 6.30 - 14.00 Monday to Thursday, 6.30 - 15.00 Friday and Saturday. This is not a tourist market with trinkets and beach dresses, it's where the Canarians come to do their daily shopping.

Like Waitrose on steroids.

You have never seen fruit like this. It's all enormous, brightly coloured. Avocados the size of melons - I thought that they WERE melons the first time I saw them. Vegetables. Fish - weird things from the Atlantic depths. And bustling full of people all morning.

The sights, the sounds, the smells - like nothing else you'll see on your holiday!

There is a good-sized carpark near it, so you can come early, park your car, go and have breakfast in one of the bars, visit the Cathedral and the streets of Vegueta, come back and visit the market, then eat fresher-than-fresh food for lunch in one of the little restaurants.

Aaaah! Lovely.

we are staying in Anfi near Arguineguin and no sun this morn, so we drove to the Old Quarter (Vegueta)with some trepidation about being able to park and finding things. No problem! V was clearly marked off the motorway and just round a bend to the left the market was on the corner and an open air carpark directly opposite-with spaces-bliss!The market itself was photography heaven(like a mini version of the Bocqueria in Barcelona). A stall holder insisted on having his photo taken with me, while clutching a melon. he said he had a Facebook page, so may be on there!Fruit, spices, fish and a second hand clothes shop-tatty,but good fun. Out of the back door there's a modern coffee shop-cakes better than the coffee, but good value and the sandwiches looked gr8 too. Managed to find the Cathedral nearby(go left out of the market) . If you cant get into the carpark drive past and there's an underground one on the right. worth a visit.

The only people who should be visiting this place are the police. Totally ripped off, including a charge of four euros for two bananas, which we were too stunned to argue over. If this reflects anywhere near the true cost of fruit on the island then it's a wonder the inhabitants aren't succumbing to scurvy.

Come for the exotic, colourful displays of fruit and help yourself to free samples of mango. But don't feel under any compulsion to buy anything. If you do decide to buy anything then precede every request with cuanto es and, make sure that they write down the exact price beforehand. But frankly you're better off avoiding these con merchants. Perhaps not all the stalls are the same, in which case it's a shame that the one rotten apple has ruined it for the rest of them. The one to definitely avoid was in the central aisle just before the end of the fruit area, towards the cheese section. There was one man and one woman when we were there, both middle aged. The man, at least, spoke some English. Avoid.

We entered the market because we had seen it on tv. It is a big market with different aereas : fish, meat, vegetables but we enjoyed the part with the fruits because it was very exotic. The people were very friendly and they gave you free fruit tasting. It was a nice experience !

We couldn't believe how fresh the meat, fish and vegetables were..We brought some meats and veg back to Ireland as you cant get them from Dublin. There are several small local bars around the market which are very friendly .Well worth a visit if you are a foodie
