We visited Anaga on the first full day of our vacation in Tenerife. We arrived early because our main destination of the day was not this, but Taborno's small hiking trail. We've walked all 3 roads here. (Because trail 3 encompasses them all) It's very nice, the nature is beautiful and well built. It's really short trail, for someone who likes to hike, take long walks in nature it can seem too short.

The only negativ thing is that there are a lot of people. Even though it wasn't the best time (lot of clouds in the morning, almost raining), there are probably more people at other times. There are signs in several places to stop and watch the nature: see, listen, feel. You cannot really listen to the sounds of nature when people talk everywhere. But this is always the case with the popular tourist destinations. :)

The longest trail can be easily accomplished in an hour. It is worth going to the village of Taborno after that, where only we were on the hiking path and we had an amazingly beautiful view.

We were keen to stretch our legs in the Anaga region and the Sendero de los Sentidos provided an easily accessible route from Cruz del Carmen. There is good parking at the mirador and you can follow a selection of trails for varying levels of accessibility. We took the longest of the routes, around 1 mile, through the laurisilva forest to reach the viewing platform at Llano de Los Loros. It is over rough ground and I would recommend sturdy shoes. The walk provided a great view and the laurisilva is remarkable. Almost couldn't believe I was in Tenerife. Absolutely worth the drive from the South of the island.

A gorgeous forest which looks like a scene from a fairy tale story or a fantasy film. There are three paths, the easiest one is accesible for wheelchairs. The trees are:
• Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis)
• Hija (Prunus lusitanica ssp. Hixa) Portugal laurel
• Faya (Myrica faya)
• Viñátigo (Persea indica)
• Acebiño (Ilex canariensis) Small-leaved holly
• Naranjero (Ilex perado ssp. Platyphylla) Madeira Holly
• Tejo (Erica scoparia)
• Follao (Viburnum rigidum) Canary snowball
• Palo blanco (Picconia excelsa)
• Sanguino (Rhamnus glandulosa)

Easy trail through the old laurel forest. It starts and ends at the Anaga Park visitor centre. In December it was not especially interesting. Some parts are covered with a wooden footbridge. You come across some viewpoints on the way - on clear days, its possible to see Teide volcano.

When we arrived at 11am, we managed to get a parking space - when we left an hour later everywhere was full with people queuing to park so like anywhere, it’s a good idea to get there early. It was pouring down when we arrived but having made the effort to get there, we put on our waterproof jackets and set off and I’m very glad we did. There is so much tree cover that we couldn’t feel much rain when we were in there and the slight mist made it more atmospheric. We did the longest of the three walks and managed fine in trainers. The rain had stopped by the time we finished and it was well worth the visit. We went in the Visitor Centre which had information in English if you asked for it. I sent photos to a friend and she said the scenery looked like something out of The Hobbit.

The beginning of the trail is by the information point in Cruz Del Carmen. Getting there is already a breath-taking experience. We were going there through the Anaga mountains from las Teresitas and the views were absolutely stunning! Beware: it's a bit colder there, so take a jumper- just in case.

There are three trails: one that is very short and probably adequate to elderly people who have difficulty walking. The other two are more demanding, but pretty easy for those who like hiking. Don't go there in white sneakers, unless there has been no rain for several days. After the rain the trails are probably very difficult to go through because of the mud. Although it hadn't rained before our arrival there, the humidity of the place was enough to make some parts of the trails more demanding and on several occasions I was on the verge of slipping ;-) However, if you are careful, everythng should be fine. The only consequence you can have will be dirty shoes. This is a small price to pay for a very nice walk in the laurel forest!

One of the hiking paths in Anaga Rural Park. It is an easy trail through the "laurisilva" (ancient forest), okay to do with kids. It starts very close to the parking lot / visitor centre.
