This old castle has been transformed into a bona fide youth hostel with main lounge, dining room (a building apart, downstairs), tv area, snack bar and café and dormitories and semi-private bedrooms. The historic building may be lovely to look at from the gates and from Toledo across the Tajo river but its surrounding park with mature trees, benches and... More

If the architecture of this Templar Monastery/fortress on the Tagus seems familiar, it is because it is prominently portrayed in El Greco's masterpiece "Skyline of Toledo" No entry, now a hostel.

The place serves as a youth hostel and visitors are not allowed. However, you can take some good pics from outside. If you are close to the Alcántara Bridge and have some time give it a try.

This was a crushing disappointment. The castle is totally closed to tourists. I called them on the intercom at their gate and they wouldn't let me in: "No tours! Only guests allowed. We are a hotel and a hostel". I asked them if they would make an exception since I had travelled so far and they gave me an emphatic... More
