The largest plaza in old town Toledo
The Plaza de Zocodover was the spot the our tour guide gave us a break to find a restroom and have a coffee before beginning our tour of Toledo. My wife and I had booked a bus day trip to Toledo from Madrid during a visit this past spring. The plaza is the largest we saw in the old town. We were told that it was used in the past for bullfights, public executions during the Inquisition, and as a market. We were there in the morning before it got packed with tourists, so it was actually picturesque.

    Toledo Hub
The Plaza was our first stop in Toledo after arriving in the city. Since the Alcazar and other tourist attractions were not yet open that early in the morning we got to leisurely enjoy some pastries and coffee. Later in the afternoon the plaza got livelier as more visitors gathered here along with the open stores and restaurants. It was a lot easier to find either the bus or taxis to get us back to the station instead of walking.

This plaza COULD be nice. Unfortunately there is a lot of negatives undermining any potential ambiance: 1) it’s ringed with American fast food “restaurants” (McDonalds, Burger King, with Starbucks nearby); 2) heaps of litter from above-named restaurants; 3) it’s a short-term parking lot for many delivery vehicles; 4) and there are tons of tourists. The city council should be ashamed allowing these non-essential junk food establishments on the city’s most visible plaza of a gorgeous ancient city.

This is the heart of the city. Our tour guide left us to explore the shops and sights on our own. It was extremely crowded at every turn. We enjoyed seeing the shops with beautiful items and lots of marzipan.

We were so glad we had a landmark, the McDonalds, where our driver picked us up. The street was so busy he had to drive around as there was no place to park. If you have a guide who leaves you off, make sure you know where to meet him. We had a hard enough time just finding our way out of the plaza. McDonalds was easy to remember and find.

A beautiful square full of history, surrounded by cafes and restaurants. Plaza de Zocodover is the most important square in Toledo, the heart of Toledo. Very lively, full of bars, restaurants and shops. A meeting place for people. Nice place.

Plaza De Zocodover is the main plaza of Toledo and one of it's major landmarks. Given it's prominence, I was expecting something on the scale of Plaza D'Espanya in Madrid or Plaza de Catalunya in Barcelona, but not really. It's a large public square, but there's only cafes, restaurants and shops. Even these are everywhere in the old town of Toledo since it's a tourist heavy destination.

Don't get me wrong, the square is good, just not a place I'd go out of the way to see.

Historically its name derives from the Arabic, Suk-al-Dawab, which means animal market. Commercial areas stretch into the neighbouring street with well know modern shops
Would highly recommend booking a ticket on the little red TRAIN which pulls several open coaches and take a 45/50 minute tour of the city, for around 5 euros. Cost includes audio commentary.
You can also book tickets for the red topped hop-on hop-off open tourist buses too for 10 euros. Cost includes audio commentary
We did both and found that both were very interesting and good value. The train from ground level, so to speak & the open topped tourist bus from higher up viewing
If you are that way inclined and wish to eat McDonalds or Burger King, both have large restaurant in the square but there are loads & loads of tipically Spanish restaurants both at the side of the square and down the side streets, which we found were of better value and quality

Nice small main square of Toledo. This is where you find the local bus starts and ends. Where you can find free tours, paid tours, and tourist info. Not much going on. There a McDonalds and other shops circling this quiet square.
