Consecrated in 1160 this cathedral is a museum of the Romanesque. The contrast with the new cathedral is extreme and this has the most beautiful wall paintings. There is a super 14th century organ in one of the chapels.
You can get a ticket to see inside the cathedrals, after 5pm apparently it's free. However it is much more fun to go on the tower climb, you still see inside both the old and new cathedral and you get fantastic views from the top.
Marvellous tour for 5 euro’s including audiobook guide. Amazing chapels to see and a Cupola that gives the neck a severe workout. Incredible to see how these vast structures were built. Also take in the tower tour for a further small fee.
It’s interesting that this city has two cathedrals joined onto each other - the old one is really old which is reflected in the artwork and architecture inside and out . Lovely spot where both high altars are visible together reflecting exactly this!!
We were there in January and there was no line Even it there was a line it would be worth is because it is beautiful and we loved the tour to the steeple and viewing the rooftop of the cathedral and city.
