We stayed in the nearby Hospes Palacio and Plaza de Anaya is close by. However, If you have been walking on Gran Via and are making your way up towards the cathedrals then you will very likely come upon this quaint plaza and the surrounding streets. The masonry work is outstanding but at night with illumination coming from all parts it takes on a wholly different perspective. In fact Salamanca by night is quite a different experience to the city by day.

The square received its beautiful name from the palace of the same name, which in turn received its name from Diego de Anaya Maldonado, the founder of St. Bartholomew's College at the beginning of the XV century. However, there was no square then. Anaya Square owes its appearance in 1811 to the French occupiers. The French governor of old Castile, General Paul Thibault, who lived in the Anaya Palace, ordered the demolition of the block between the palace and the New Cathedral to open up a view of its northern side. The final appearance of the square was acquired after reconstruction in 1972 - 1975 under the direction of architect Victor Caballero Ungria. The dominant feature of the square is the cathedral. Opposite is the same Anaya Palace that gave the square its name. In fact, this is not a palace, but the building of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Salamanca. To his left is the Church of San Sebastian, the former university chapel. The perimeter of the square is closed from the west by three-storey houses, also belonging to the University of Salamanca.

Plaza de Anaya is a fairly large public square in the heart of the Historic Centre of Salamanca. This is where you find the Salamanca Cathedral complex as well as some of the University of Salamanca buildings including Anaya Palace and St. Stephen's Church. The plaza includes good landscaping, mature trees, flower beds and statue of Padre Camara.
It is a nice spot to enjoy viewing Plateresque architecture of the New Cathedral and Neo-Classical facade of the Anaya Palace. We enjoyed walking around the square viewing the attractive historic buildings here during the day with blue skies as well as at night when the buildings are lit up with flood lights.

Got to be honest, as points of interest go in Salamanca this is fairly low key and somewhere you are bound to pass through at some stage, probably when visiting the cathedral looking for astronauts.

One of the larger plazas in the university area of Salamanca, the plaza offers a great place to relax and check out the beautiful facades and planning. One the most interesting planting is a Sequoia Treed from California and one of the most interesting facades is the to the cathedral. If you are looking for a rewarding hunt, see if you can find and astronaut and a gargoyle licking an ice cream cone in the repaired facia surrounding the entry door on the left side.

This plaza is a patch of greenery in front of the entrance to the new Cathedral on one side, and San Sebastián Church, on the other. This is not a destination point but rather a mere access venue.

If you have been walking on Gran Via and are making your way up towards the cathedrals then you will very likely come upon Plaza de Anaya. It is a lovely open area or plaza and surrounded by excellent views. The sandstone masonry work is outstanding but at night with illumination coming from all parts it takes on a wholly different perspective. A typical Spanish square across the cathedral surrounded by historic buildings, gardens and walkways. It is filled with students rushing to class or just hangin out. The best way to enjoy this square is to sit and enjoy the surrounding scenery and feel the ambiance. Plenty of shops and cafes nearby. I give this my GoldAdvice seal of approval.
