About
The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia is a church devoted to the Holy Family. One of Antoni Gaudi’s most famous works, the church is perhaps best known for still being under construction since 1882—with works funded purely by donations. Take a lift to the top of the towers for a panoramic view of the city and marvel at the ornate architecture. The nativity facade and crypt have also been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status.
Skip the line with a pre-booked tour with tower access, or combine your visit with another of Gaudi's work, Parc Guell.

Neighbourhood: Eixample
Passing through the glorious Plaça Catalunya, you enter the newer city district of Eixample, literally translated as “extension,” which immediately becomes recognisable by its more spacious streets and elegant atmosphere. The main artery of this sizable district, Passeig de Gracia, is lined with high-end international designer stores. Not to be outdone, the glitz and glamour of this zone is perhaps best exemplified by the comfortable and lavish five-star hotels that flank the divine and modernistic buildings from some of the world’s most recognised architects such as Gaudi and Montaner.

It's a must see in Barcelona. My tip is to get a guide with skip the line passes. We had a guide and she timed everything perfectly. We waited about 5 minutes in line and to go through security took another 5 minutes. There were lines and lines of people waiting to get in. There is no shade so the wait will be very hot. If you only see the outside you will be missing a lot.

This is an absolute must go-to in Barcelona. It is unlike any other church i've ever been to, and a great characterization of Gaudi.

Do yourself a favor and use the audio guided tours. So many interesting facts one would not have known otherwise. A Must see while in Barcelona. Keep in mind it is always crowded so be patient.

The Basilica is incredible! You cannot believe the architectural detail until you get up close. While we did not tour inside, we visited here twice. Very easy to access via Metro.

Beautiful, but unhelpful staff. Very expensive and with tickets at first they said that we couldn't go in. Having tickets and spending more than 400 euros for it. They said that was full.

Gaudi had amazing, and very ambitious ideas - and making this with all natural light And displaying the seasons… it’s incredible. Very crowded but with the group we got right in. Did not do towers but if you do they say you take elevators up and stairs down. The audio was okay, our leader was very informative but the radios cut out some. Definitely a highlight and a must see

Many of us travel Europe to see the interesting architecture from centuries past. This quest usually includes specific stops at Cathedrals and Basilicas, many surviving from the Middle Ages. If you are part of this group, you should add to your bucket list, a visit to Barcelona and the magnificent Sagrada Familia. Designed by Gaudi over a century ago, it is the most modern religious structure to be found in Europe. Don't just accept a view of the exterior; you must go inside. Like the Grand Canyon, it cannot be really experienced without a trip to the interior. We used a tour by the name of Cool Tours Barcelona, which provided time stamped passes which avoid standing in long lines.

Wondering what is the best way to visit. My daughter and I are planning a whole trip to Barcelona just to visit the Basilica and wanted to know the best way to do this? Private tour? Buy tickets online directly?

I booked online in the UK.
You download the Sagrada familia phone app. You book your tickets and an entrance time. Your tickets arrive in the app as a QR code to be scanned at the entrance. You can either hold the tickets on the app or transfer them to other party members phones - but they must be ‘live’ not screen shots from your gallery. Each ticket allows you to access the recorded audio tour so ensure you have ear phones to listen. You are then guided around the basilica via clearly marked number boards.
We found the audio guide really informative and you can go as quickly or slowly as you like. so whether you’d benefit from a private tour I can’t really say I’m sorry. But, either way I’m sure you’re going to love the experience - have a lovely time.

Can I wear open toed sandals inside La Sagrada Familia? I read online that it was not permitted however I would like to know if this is enforced. Thank you.

I am afraid you are right. This is from the Barcelona tickets site
“Shoes - You will have a lot of walking to do inside Sagrada Familia. So make sure to wear proper flat shoes. Visitors entering barefoot and wearing open sandals or flip-flops are strictly not allowed.“
By the way I think it’s ridiculous and without being glib about it. If they were okay for Jesus they should be fine in his places of worship
can i buy tickets at the door to see this church? how much are they? thanks

Se intendi la torre centrale come quella della Natività’ ( che consiglio ) i gradini sono circa 500. Consiglio se non avete problemi di claustrofobia. Merita.
HI, how early should you arrive compared to the scheduled time/time slot?

You should reach minimum 20 minutes earlier and chances are bright that you would be allowed to enter earlier. A private guide is highly recommended.

Does the app demand internet to work? If so, does Sagrada Familia provide free wifi?

If I remember correctly- I downloaded app at hotel and then didn’t need internet on site as I just went from number to number in app.

We will be visiting in March. From the reviews one tower has an elevator and others only mention 15min walk up steps. Can you book for the elevator in advance or is it an add on depending if that tower is open? Happy to walk up but friend wouldn’t manage it. Will be booking in advance to avoid the queues

Hello, yes, elevator is in tower (Nativity tower). But only for up direction. Down is staircase - 325? normal steps and then spiral staicase. The spiral staircase is little bit dangerous - railing only on lef side and small hole on right side :). And yes, it is steep.
We booked elevator on official site for the exact time -+20 min...
