About
The European Museum of Modern Art , MEAM, exhibits the finest Contemporary Figurative Art. It is owned by TheFoundation of Arts and Artists, and the purpose is to promote and diffuse Figurative Art of the 20th and 21st Centuries. The Foundation’s claim is to find a new contemporary language without denying tradition by progressing into the new Century. Moreover, the Foundation of Arts and Artists, organizes each year the Figurativas Painting and Sculpture Awards, and with the wesbiteFigurativas en Red opens a window with the artworks of the Contemporary Figurative artists. The MEAM is currentlly located at the Gomis Palace, in the middle of the streets of the Born in Barcelona, a neighborhood where culture is always present and reflects the charm of the old part of the city, an area that knew how to mix tradition and modernity, becoming a requiered visit for the tourits interested in the Monumental Barcelona. The MEAM is different from other Contemporary Art museums because it houses living artists who created Figurative Art. These artworks are hardly seen in other museums, collections or entities, to whom the word Contemporary is identified by experiment and abstraction.

Neighbourhood: El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.

- Clifford WBarrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom49 contributionsDon't miss thisOne of the best art galleries I have been to. Earlier in the day we went to the Picasso gallery which was ok and also the MOCO gallery that was overpriced, small and disappointing having been to the one in Amsterdam. At a bargain €12 and spread over three floors it was excellent. Don't be put off with the word modern in the title of the museum, it is not modern art as the Tate gallery in London. There was fantastic thought provoking art and sculptures throughout. On the top floor there was a series of paintings by Haitz de Diego depicting the war of Syria each with a brief poem /explanation of the art. The other two floors were for me spell binding at each turn. We did not need to pre book and the art gallery was quiet with plenty of room to admire the exhibits. I did buy the book of the exhibits as a reminder of a great day to reminis over the cold winter days.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023
- andream0402Melbourne, Australia4,057 contributionsAccidental delightWe actually went to this museum by accident. We had been trying to find MOCO. We didn’t regret it for a minute. There is currently an exhibition on by Mark Tennant which is excellent. I believe it ends May 12th. The other exhibits were just amazing. I’m no art specialist but it was hard to tell what were photographs and what was painted or drawn. Incredible work. Very close to the Picasso museum. €13 entry.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 21, 2024
- Smilix7 contributionsSublime! The exhibition of modern portraits and the 25 year anniversary works from their permanent collection (showing summer 2024) were excellent. I would definitely visit again to see what their curators have chosen to show. One of the best smaller museums to visit in Barcelona and relatively uncrowded to others.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten August 27, 2024

Hit or miss depending on what artists are on exhibit. The majority of the space was dedicated to 2 artists, and I wasn't a fan of either. Price is high and reflects reality of keeping a small museum going in a very expensive part of the city. Larger state-supported musuems are a better deal, but if you want to see a certain artist here, then support them.

This museum was jam-packed with figurative painting. Not particularly my style but I appreciated the diversity of subject matter. A handful of pieces spoke to me; however, most were lacking. Furthermore, the building feels almost abandoned and the collection neglected.

Located next to the Picasso museum, in the heart of the Gothic quarters, this small museum focuses on contemporary figurative international art.
Inexpensive entrance fee.
Very dynamic curators propose interesting painting and sculpting workshops as well as classical and jazz concerts weekly.
Hats off!

This is a small art gallery very close to the Picasso museum but in our opinion much more enjoyable, cheaper, and with no queue to get in! A large proportion of the paintings are of nudes. They are very modern and of outstanding quality, and it was one of the best things we visited while in Barcelona.

MEAM is situated in the Palau Gomis, a once private house restored and the winner of a design prize accordingly. There are around 230 works of art here by artists from all over the world. Situated on three floors (accessed by stairs or lift), the top one being very small, the museum is manageable and pleasant, with beautiful natural light and soft classical music playing in the background. This should be visited for the building alone, which is fabulous, but the art is also extremely credible and interesting. There is a small shop for souvenirs downstairs, and there are also concerts held in the courtyard garden throughout the Summer. Very enjoyable. Entrance fee is 7 euros for adults, 5 for concessions.

I walked to the Picasso Museum and the line was so long I decided to return later. On my way there I passed this Museum that I went in instead. I must say it was fantastic, much better than the Picasso Museum which I found disappointing to say the least. The MEAM is worth the visit.

Brilliant range of contemporary art mainly figurative. Housed in a lovely building a stones throw from the Very busy Picasso Museum. It was very reasonable and very quite. Use the discount vouchers you get on the tourist buses and entrance is only 5 euros.

There are modern artists there. I recommend Istvan Sandorfi, who represents hyperrealism.

Hi, Do you have a collection of Salvador Dali's works? Thanks
Written March 19, 2015
if you are interested in Dali and yor are coming to Barcelona before the end of june there is a very nice exhibition Picasso-Dali at the Picasso Museum of Barcelona
