The place when I knew was built by fishermen "the people" knew the reason why I felt the devotion within. The architecture is lovely with the very high ceilings and angels drawn up there. The story of this basilica is what makes it great. It lies in the old neighborhoods and I'd recommend visiting after sunset and a visit afterwards... More

We'll worth the time. It's exquisite. Our private tour guide highly recommended this. He wasn't wrong! We love the older architecture. You just can't see this type of structure in the US.

I may not be of the popular opinion here, but I would suggest visiting this church above any other in Barcelona. Walking up to the doors you are given an incredible façade full of such much detail you can't take it all in at once. Just keep looking and you'll see a statue or a window you missed. The inside... It is not open all the day, so you have to check the opening hours. As it is close to Picasso Museum so it is worth to visit that place. Very simple, austere look but at the same so beautiful.

We had the good fortune to worship at Santa Maria del Mar on Christmas day. The interior of the church is large, spacious and beautiful without being chaotic. Hearing the beautiful pipe organ added to our sense of awe and wonder. This wonder is not far from the Picasso Museum.

Staying in El Born / La Ribera

Neighbourhood Profile
El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.
