The plaza is located in the heart of old Madrid near the Prado Museum, Retiro Park and Puerta de Alcala. It is actually a busy traffic roundabout with a statue of Goddess Cibeles in her chariot drawn by two lions at its center. The status is surrounded by fountains and flower beds. Near the museum area this is a very impressive statue and fountain in the middle of the traffic going around a major toad intersection.

The Plaza de Cibeles has a fountain with a secret. Observe the lions, underneath of them there are pipes connected to the Banco de España guarding the bars of gold at 35 meters deep. In case of a robbery, the waters from the fountain will inundate the room in seconds.

One of the most typical places of Madrid, although it does not give much is where the real madrid celebrates its triumphs

I thought this was in a park but its really in the middle of a large rotary so you cant really appreciate it without the whir of 100s of cars around you

Plaza de Cibeles is an extremely busy square at the intersection of various main streets including Paseo del Prado. It features Madrid´s landmark, the Fuente de Cibeles (Fountain of Cybele) and is adorned with an ensemble of noteworthy neo-classical architecture, the best known example of which is the impressive and slighty over-the-top Palacio de Cibeles, formerly known as Palacio de... This is a great area in Madrid to walk around and admire the Plaza de Cibeles. It is a must attraction in that city. Alcalá is one of the main streets in Madrid and connects directly with Gran Via. Don't miss it.

Staying in Chueca

Neighbourhood Profile
Chueca is the hip, gay neighbourhood of Madrid where many of the streets are narrow and intimate, but where the hustle and bustle and the eclectic storefronts and people give it a distinctly urban feel. The main thoroughfare is Calle Hortaleza and the main square is Plaza Chueca, completely filled with terraza tables serving copas (mixed drinks) during summer. A mixture of trendy and grungy, some of the adult businesses here are explicitly racy in their signage. From the rainbow flags to the signs above the entrances of its many funky bars, to the date spot restaurants, Chueca is a vibrant and colorful place. It's always interesting to explore the different corners of Chueca by day, and by night, the area becomes a major nightlife destination when the clubs open their doors.
