Neighbourhood: Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

One of the places always difficult to find in any city. A local cafe/bar/restaurant where you can enjoy some very, very good local, live music.Great athmosphere, great service.
And so very far from being a tourist trap.

La Fidula, café-concierto with concerts and jam sessions,
Calle de las huertas 57, Madrid
February 2007
Every sunday evening excellent jazz musicians living in Madrid meet there for jam session. Start is 21h30, the entering costs Euro 3.50. We met there the legend Jaqub Malik, sax and piano, he does not play any more much, but when, then it is great. Then we saw Nirankar Khalsa, fantastic drummer and Hector Oliveira, Bass. Not much people there, so you get a nearly privat jam session and can talk with the musicians after their performance. A jung guy from Barcelona, living in Madrid, told me that he goes any sunday evening possible. Sometime
he is the only guest but the musician dont care, they come together for their fun and play music for their own pleasure. It is a real great place.

We went on free open mic night, great singers, a nice glass of wine and a welcoming atmosphere. A pity we didn't have the chance to go back for a flamenco night!

Local small bar with a little stage. The band we saw was a lot of fun - a trio - piano, guitar, singer/saxophonist. People go here to listen to music and have a few drinks with friends. If you’re not interested in the music, don’t go - then you won’t be told off for talking through the performance. Be sure to put some money in the donations box on your table to pay the band.

Bad experience. Walked in mid song and was told to be quiet. Our eating of the free crisps sat at the very back of the bar was enough to tip the pretentious customers over the edge and feel so offended that they had to come over and ask for our silence. Grown up with a folk background and telling this story to these musicians will make them choke on their (free) crisps.

We chanced upon this little bar after our visit to the Prada. We returned in the evening and were treated to a jazz duo (Great female Vocals and nice Guitarist). This is a great little place with a relaxed atmosphere and vibe.I can thoroughly recommend it.

If you've never seen a flamenco show this place is highly worth a visit! We went on our Saturday night in Madrid looking for a nice evening to spend and we found ourselves fascinated by this modern/traditional club. The show was 10 euros with a glass of fine wine (after the first it was 2.50) and the show was absolutely amazing with 3 female dancers, voice and guitar. All the artists were professionals so that we greeted for the beautiful and passionate show. We were glad we saw it!

Went to watch the flamenco show at la fidula last weekend and came back again for more this Saturday! The music was brilliant, a very passionate singer and captivating dancers. The price (10 euros including a drink) is very reasonable for Madrid but the quality is outstanding! Will definitely be back again soon :-)
Thanks for a fantastic performance!
