Two interesting churches on the top of Matera

Well worth a visit. Tho relatively small churches, one carved inside the soft rock, with a great view of Matera, the river canyon and the valley.

And partially cut into the rock - one of the famous rupestrian churches of ancient Matera. Towering over Piazza San Pietro Caveoso but the path to entrance is from Via Bruno Buozzi. Entrance fee is 3 euros but you can combine it with other rupestrian churches for some discounts. The old frescoes show mainly few saints (but some frescoes were... More

This is a lovely church hewn totally out of the rock in the centre of Sasso Caveoso, on the top of the limestone cliff, Monterrone. Quite a climb but a wonderful view! Some of the frescoes have been removed for restoration purposes and placed in the Historical and Artistic Heritage Officeof Matera. There is one fresco of the Virgin and... More

Interesting cave church with lots of frescos. Located high up many steps, with good views over the surrounding area. Unfortunately no photos are allowed inside. Adult tickets are EUR 3, but combined church tickets are available at reduced rates.

Something interesting to visit in Matera. Sort of must-see. Also needs some climbing. The view from there is very nice.

Entering this church it really looks to go back centuries in time. Suggest to buy the cumulative ticket that allow to visit also the other churches. Must see it if you go to Matera.

This was our third and final rock church visit and was selected for its prominent location and potential views. There are many great vistas to see as you climb to the top. It is especially pretty towards sunset, you can watch the lights start to come on. The church itself has frescoes that aren't as beautiful as S.Lucia and blocked... More

Amazing church within the Sassi of Matera. You cannot take photographs but you are provided with a phamplet that has photos and an explanation as to what is there. Some beautiful artwork that is slowly being eaten away by mould and time. Well worth a visit.

it's three euro to enter, no photos allowed, very small and could probably be visited in 15 minutes or so. But easy to get to and it is impressive the frescoes survived this long.
