Casa Cava

About
The only underground Cultural Center in the world! An auditorium described in international journals of architecture and design. Firstly carved as a quarry of stones, then abandoned and used as a waste dump, now restored and transformed into a Center for Youth Creativity. It is a symbol of the historical evolution and cultural rebirth of Matera.

My wife and I wandered into Casa Cava by accident as we were exploring this magnificent city. We were given a tour and explanation by the young fellow who was cashiering for the city of Matera. The complex is a beautiful example of the use of one of the many caves in the Sassi. The Cava is an old quarry and the Casa is the house above through which workers were lowered by rope to work in the quarry. Nowadays the complex has been converted into an auditorium/concert hall where many artists exhibit. The engineering to provide the optimum acoustics is most impressive, in fact the entire complex is a testament to the negative architecture that was used to create this showcase. A wonderful place to visit to show your support!

Matera is a magical and unique place. I started my exploration of the Sassi with La Casa Cava which I would recommend. It is essentially a large cave turned into a theatre and gallery. I was given a very informative talk in excellent English by Pietro about of the background to the cave and its transformation. Each seat is complete with its own humidifier and all the installations are temporary so as not to take from the cave's original state.

We read about the Casa Cava and decided to pay a visit. There was an art exhibition on which was interesting and the whole space was very pleasant. We decided to go to the play that evening and it was worth it to see the largely local audience in the foyer and a truly local atmosphere. Unfortunately we couldn't stay to the end as we had to meet the kids for dinner and the play started late.

I strongly recommend anyone to start their visit in Matera with this one, Casa Cava.
It is not only interesting by itself but there's a short movie full of useful information for the rest of the vist. It helped us a lot to understand the history of the place and the meaning of different places.

A wonderful Cultural Centre with an auditorium in an old underground quarry. The guided tour leads through the strange story of this place. Matera is full of hidden treasures.

This place is located just on the edge of the Sassi near the Piazzetta San Biagio. It is literally a cave under the houses located above and upstairs it has a balcony with a great view of the Sassi. There is a video presentation (in Italian with English subtitles) which gives the history of Matera and is very interesting. The entry fee is €3 and I would recommend a visit.

I decided to check this place out after my curiosity got the better of me and I followed the maze of signs pointing to this place. It does have a small entrance fee (3EUR when I went) but the young gentleman who manages the place provided me with a 15 min one-on-one explanation of it's history as well as quite a bit of background on Matera itself...totally worth it just for the lecture.
As for the theater...it is gorgeous. It would be fantastic for a meeting, concert, etc. It's pretty small, but what do you expect when you're building a theater inside a cave! They are building a beautiful cafe on the side but it looks like the city needs to approve it first.

It was difficult to imagine that a whole family, plus their valuable farm animals, once lived in this small, humble home. The household items, furnishings, utensils and farm tools were all authentic. We were so glad we went in!
