We decided to do a day trip to Capri by ferry. We got the ferry from Sorrento port to Capri port.
We arrived in Capri after about 25-30 minutes. Once we arrived we quickly realised how busy it was. Tourists left, right, and centre. We ended up turning right off the ferry and accidentally hiked up to the very top, which took about an hour.
At the top you will find many shops and restaurants. If you are looking to shop in Capri I suggest you bring a lot of money.
We tried to get lunch in a restaurant at the main square at the top, but a beer was €15 and a soft drink was €11 so we said no way. We then got the bus back down to the harbour because we were not spending that much money on a beer or coke, plus we were exhausted from the hike up. We ended up having a much nicer lunch at one of the restaurants down at the harbour.
The bus was like a rollercoaster. The driver was speeding around sharp corners. We were happy to get off that bus.
After lunch we made our way to the port to get the ferry back to Sorrento. Extremely disorganised, nobody knew what platform to be on. The staff were no help whatsoever. Once our ferry arrived everyone was pushing and shoving one another to get a seat on the ferry. A man was shoving my mum onto the ferry, wanted to reel his neck in let me tell you that. They should’ve had an organised system, instead of first come first serve and maybe a single line system.
Long review I know, but I would not recommend Capri unless you are willing to spend a lot of money. More for the rich and wealthy.

Capri is an overrun tourist trap, I recommend skipping it altogether, unless you plan to stay overnight. If you stay overnight then the throngs of day trippers leave late in the afternoon. Basically, if a tiny island is known all over the world...time to find another island to visit. It was packed shoulder to shoulder and everything was marked up basically double what we spent in other locations nearby.

We arrived to Napoli by cruise and instead of shore tour, we went solo... much better. You get more time and don't mess with busses and such. At the port, get a jet boat over to capri, easy peesy, they speak English at the ticket counter. Used credit card.
August has lots of tourists, so u need to form up a lot, quick 1 hour to capri, make sure you get on the correct boat. Ask others in the line to confirm.
Arriving to capri, easier to form up and buy a ticket on the tram up the hill...
Go early, so much to do if you are on a day trip and add extra time for your return to not miss your jet boat back to Napoli port.
I usually calculate the time I have and cut in 2, then start heading back at the halfway time.
Out of all the ports of call, Mykonos, Santorini, Napoli etc, we liked capri the most.
Spend a wonderful time walking through the streets, don't forget to go home.... it's easy to forget in capri. Cheers.

We visited the Island of Capri in July. We did the boat tour and visited Capri’s city center. We had a little bit of time left before the departure of our ferry back to Amalfi so we went to this beach to wet our feet. It was a very hot and humid day and the beach was busy. Since it’s free, you can enter it freely. It’s very close to the main harbor. Right on the left from the booths where you purchase tickets to funicular. The water was wonderful! So refreshing, clean and clear! It was a bit painful to walk on the stones so if you are planning to stay there, make sure to come prepared!

We visited the beach club attached to the beach. It was expensive. The chairs were $25 euro each. The beach has a lot of rocks on it and can make for a difficult entry/exit from the water. Bring some swim shoes with you. The water was refreshing after being in the sun all day, the views were ok

After fighting the battle of the funicular up to the Piazza, elbowing our way to and from the famous garden, and then fighting to get back down the funicular, we still had some time to stroll the Marina before catching our ferry to Sorrento. That brief time, strolling among small cafes along a charming seascape decorated with small boats, was among our favorite memories of the trip.

Well if you take a ferry over from Sorrento (or naples or amalfi) be expected to get off and be bombarded by people trying to get you on a boat or in a private taxi or car. To avoid the largest crowds take the first ferry over and get going! This is just the way it is. So have a plan. What do you want to see and how are you going to do it. There are plenty of ways to do it from inexpensive to exclusive. We chose to hire a convertible taxi for the day $140 EU. There was 4 of us and that made it affordable. The driver took us to the blue grotto where we were able to take the row boat and see it. A much better option than going by boat if you don't have good sea legs or you want to be more efficient with your time. Getting out of the boat you rent to get to the grotto and into the small row boats that take you to the grotto looked to be very challenging for many people. It was more fun seeing the people getting in and out of the row boats then seeing the Grotto itself. They make such a production out of paying to get in to the Grotto! Then we went to Anacapri and took the chairlift up to Mount Salero...what great fun and the view at the top is spectacular. We walked the town of Anacapri and visit St. Michelle. All very nice and worth doing. From there onto to Marina Piccola for a nice lunch and walk on the beach. Then our driver dropped us off in Capri. We aren't much for shopping so we hiked to the Natural Arch and the Faragolini. Then a gelato in Capri and a ride down the funicular to celebrate a fabulous day. This is a great way to see Capri.

This is the port of entry into the Isle of Capri as there is no airport on the island. Marina Grande is a lively place, many times packed with people.
Most people gyrate to public transportation for Capri or Anacapri. Tickets for for all transportation is the building to the right when you exit the entrance to the port. Buses and taxis are to the right too.
It will cost you about $20 for a taxi to Capri town and about $40 or so to Anacapri. The rides are usually in an open car. Buses and the Funicular are 2 Euros. The non-AC buses are extremely packed in.
Marina Grande is also the area where you may want to catch a boat ride around this beautiful island. For about 18 or so euros you can catch a large boat. Depending where you are in the queue, will depend where you sit.
Some of these boats will also stop at the Blue Grotto. The wait, though, was three hours when we went. We decided to take early buses to the Blue Grotto the following day.
Smaller boats could be hired. You can go by yourself or with a small group. Usually it is a two hour stint coasting as much as $160 or more. Three hours as much as $225. The hotel proprietors can hook you up too. These rental boats are fun, though, as they allow you to swim around the island.
Usually there is a long queue to ride the Funicular. It usually goes fast as they take about ninety people or so every 15 minutes. They do limit the number of people that can go up or down. This is a popular way of getting directly to Capri town. You really don’t want to walk as that hill is arduous.
There are plenty of cafe's at Marina Grande. The restaurants that our hotel proprietor recommended were Ristorante Lo Zodiaco and Ristorante da Gemma. The latter restaurant is next to the free Marina Grande Beach. There is nothing like swimming in the Mediterranean Sea.
There are a number of hotels also down by Marina Grande. The area is busy, though, and you don’t get the beautiful views from the hillsides. And, when you want to do anything on Capri you will need to take a taxi, bus or lift.

It’s a beautiful place to visit with many tourists soaking up the sun in Capri. The boats are huge in some parts and hiring a boat is recommended. We travelled from sorrento but it was chaos getting on as no one wants to form a queue. Well worth a visit

It's where you come to get to Capri, so most people simply jump on a bus or the funicular and get away as quickly as possible. That's understandable on a day trip, but as we had a week on the island, we had time to get to know it at a leisurely pace.
It became a favourite spot to lunch and people watch, as there's just so much activity, from countless boats dropping off and picking up people, to the constant throng of people passing by.
A highlight for us was seeing and walking up the steps of Sophia Loren's "Villa del Palazzo Reale" from the wonderful film set in Capri "It Started In Naples". It's immediately to the left of the little square, if you're interested.
Other than that, the port has reasonable restaurants at reasonable prices, although nothing's cheap in Capri.

What’s the least crowded day of the week to take a boat ride to Capri- Monday?
Written March 25, 2019
Hi Julia,
My husband & I only went to Capri on a Friday while on vacation to Sorrento. We were there in April & I am sure it gets busy with more tourist later in the spring to summer months.
There are also a lot of other groups booked at the same time so it is hard to say which day of the week is the best.
Sorry! But do go and enjoy Capri and be sure and take the boat ride around the island....priceless!

We will be arriving by car to take a boat from the Marina Grande. where is the nearest car park / garage to the marina?
Written June 25, 2018
Not to my knowledge if there is parking facility as mostly it’s occupied by tourist buses & luggage carriers waiting for their clients... that’s a very busy & congested area due to the arrival of boats from Naples... Capri has very small road network. Parking could be available near restaurants & few hotels...
Enjoy your stay in Capri as it’s just beautiful... heaven-on-earth...

Any recommendations on a smallprivate boat tour (not the ones over advertised/priced online that leaves from Marina Grande for family of 4 end of June for a few hours? We are only in Capri for the day and need to be back in Naples late afternoon to get back on the cruise ship.
We went on a boat-captain recommendation in Skiathos last year and it was one of the highlights of the trip.
Many thanks

I highly recommend the Bagno Tiberio private 2-hour boat tour with day at the beach club and lunch. Upgrade to a nice boat. We were impressed.

My daughter is attending a wedding in Capri the end of May. I want to hire for her and her guest a boat to take them from Capri to Positano, stay for a tour and lunch and return to Capri.
Help?
Written May 4, 2016
We have friends who go from Positano to Capri and back so I'm sure you can do the opposite. I just googled how to rent a boat on Capri and the first site I chose does do private tours including to the Amalfi coast.

Hi Everyone, Just planning my trip to Italy in May and have a question - ( well I have lots but will start with one) I'll be taking the ferry from Sorrento to Capri and thought I might go straight from the Marina Grande to the Grotto prior to heading up to my hotel in Anacapri.. my concern is I'll have my luggage with me. Does anyone know if there are storage lockers at the Marina to hold your things while you're out on your excursion? For the sake of time, I'd like to get my grotto visit in as soon as I arrive in the am and then explore the rest of the island later. I'd also love any great restaurant tips!!!
Thanks & Ciao'

Hi there, I joined the tour organized by Laser Capri, they have a booth selling tickets at Marina Grande and provides temporary luggage storage. They actually asked you to leave ur luggage at the corner in the neighboring souvenir shop, not in s room and without any lock. They don't provide you any ticket/receipt in return and there are actually no one looking after your belongings. I don't know if luggage lost is common but luckily we managed to get back our luggage without any trouble.
