- mah1066banMorristown, New Jersey135 contributionsAmazing ArtThe National archaeological Museum Naples has an amazing collection. The monumental sculptures are nothing short of spectacular. We visited the museum on September 30, 2023. The only disappointment was that due to some kind of of technical difficulties, the first floor, which contains mosaics was closed. Therefore, we were unable to see the Alexander Mosaic. They didn’t say how long that section will be closed. It is still worth visiting.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023
- Dan44766 contributionsAmazing Roman artworksAmazing statues and Roman paintings incredibly preserved from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The museum itself is in an impressive building, spacious, no crowds. Inexpensive and easily accessed by the metro station next door. Highly recommended for lovers of Ancient Rome!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 15, 2023
- evonwise17Windsor, United Kingdom219 contributionsFascinatingThis museum was fascinating! Room after room of treasures found at Pompei and surrounding ancient greek and roman archaeological sites. The artefacts were divided by type: collections of perfect 2000 year old glassware, etruscan ceramics, intricate jewellery as well as marble statues and even an exhibition of near perfect mosaics from Pompei. I was tired at the end of a long day exploring Naples, but kept being tempted into the next room!Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten October 30, 2023

Plenty of information to expand your knowledge, education, curiosity, inspiration… The world famous collection will keep you motivated and excited during the entire visit. Very nice cafeteria to refuel and take a break ( delicious baba! - yes, Napoli😊😎) Bookstore with a great selection. Treat yourself!Visited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten January 31, 2024

There’s so much to see, one could easily spend here a full day, if not even more!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 7, 2024
- Kathy SCarson City, Nevada26 contributionsAmazing frescoes, statues and mosaicsThis museum is full of amazing statues, frescos, and mosaics. We spent four hours and did not see it all. It is large, and the layout can be confusing. The audio tour did not present a sequence, but just a way to listen about what we were seeing by dialing in the number if there was one. We found that downloading Rick Steves Audio Europe transcript of it was helpful. Highly recommend!Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 19, 2024
- Hany GBakersfield, California1,889 contributionsInteresting museum! It is a walking distance like 15 minutes from catacomb di san gennaro. We booked the tickets online. You have to leave backbags at the storage before getting in. The highlight of the museum is the artifacts from Pompi and Herculaneum. We spent a couple of hours inside the museum.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 31, 2024

- Dave SMonda, Spain226 contributionsGood museum, good valueWe visited over 2 days. In total probably about 7 hours. That was about the right length of time. A very large museum with many fascinating exhibits. Many of them have bilingual Italian/English signs. Well worth the cost of admission.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 20, 2024
- Anne CDumfries, United Kingdom232 contributionsThe museum helps put all you've seen in Pompeii and Herculaneum into context. This museum is a must to see the artefacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum. I visited here last as it was the day before our return flight home. There is also the stunning collection built up by the Farnese family in Rome and transferred here. I really wish more items could be seen en situ, but they are no doubt better well preserved in the museum. I spent about 2+hours here, and like the Uffizi in Florence, there is a point of overwhelm where you can't take it all in. I bought the guidebook so I could look back on what was seen. I loved the artefacts from the Villa Dei Papiri.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 7, 2024

End OCTOBER 2019: *please note things may have changed slightly since I was there.
I was told that buying a ticket online before will save queuing and it did. You bypass the line and go straight to the ticket booth where they issue you with an actual ticket and a map in your chosen language. This is an old museum but very beautiful and being restored in sections outside. There are areas to store large bags as they aren't allowed in. Photography is allowed but without flash.
**The audio guide is good but doesn't always tell you about everything you see there. I ended up stopping listening as it was easier to read the small signs.
**Wear light clothing as it gets very hot in there
I paid E19 full day ticket originally and upgraded to audio, but I forgot how much more it was. Sorry. I spent about 3-4 hours hours in this museum and this includes a small break in the nice cafe.
Once inside most of the levels are accessible by stairs but if you have mobility issues there are lifts which in some cases are near the toilets.
The map of Pompeii, artefacts and info about Herculaneum were great to see as I had been to both, but I wish I had seen them before to put things into better perspective. The amount of exquisitely preserved carvings, cultures and mosaics here will delight young and old.
There are sections on the famous people / heroes / gods and the Hall of the Sundial was just jaw dropping - you will understand when you stand at the entrance and look up. [see photo]
My favourite area was the mosaics which even paid homage to erotica. The Egyptian section downstairs was also super interesting and the first time I have ever seen canopic jars in person. The epigraph section was interesting and it's amazing that all these have survived.
There are also temporary exhibitions in the entry section and up higher.
I loved it here. It is in walking distance a the Galleria and the Castel del Ovo [see separate review].

We went to Pompeii and then decided to go to the museum. The collection of mosaics, statues and particularly the frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum are amazing. I would not recommend driving into Naples as we did. There was a long line but we hopped on our phones and ordered tickets which got us in immediately for an additional 3 euro each. As others have said, galleries appear to open and close at will. The website is no help and what we were told by the staff was wrong. We were told some would be open until 1:30pm and they closed well before that. Others were supposed to open at 1:00pm and we happened to discover that they were open around 12:30pm. They were supposed to be open until 5:30pm but abruptly closed around 2:00pm. Even the private Italian tour guides were mystified and pissed. So my best advice is to get there around 10:30am. If something is open and you want to see it go then and hope that the galleries that interest you will be open at some point during your visit. The cafe is more than adequate to grab a bite to eat.

This museum is enormous and fortunately remains open until late afternoon. The itinerary comprises over 12 thousand m2 of exhibition space divided into 3 main sections: the Farnese collection of marbles, the Pompeian collection (remember that the most beautiful mosaics are here, not in Pompei!) and the Egyptian collection. Unfortunately the section of Magna Grecia was closed when I visited it and I was quite disappointed.

There are some amazing exhibits in this museum (and if you get the Naples/Campania Arte card you can save the 18 euro entrance fee) including finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum. There are also galleries dedicated to the pre-Roman Greek civilisation.
However, due to staff shortages some galleries are only open in the morning, others in the afternoon, so if you want to see the full range set aside a say. Otherwise check in advance which galleries are open.
It is a lovely museum, with plenty of space to enjoy the exhibits, well worth a visit.

Visited with kids (5 and 7). This museum is very expensive compared to others around Naples (and even Europe). €18 entrance doesn’t even buy you a map of the place. No interactive spaces for kids nowadays is poor in my view. Signs to guide visitors around the museum are poor. Toilets are unacceptably dirty for the price paid.

Make sure you go when the halls with the floor mosiacs are open. They are wonderful. I love that in some Eurpoean museums you can hire a smart person to take you around and explain the importance of various items. We has Antonio Sacco as our guide, and he made the museum come alive (face it, there are only so many marble statues you can see in a day). There's a lot of wonderful items from Pompeii and other local site at this museum, plus items recovered from shipwrecks in the Bay of Naples. This museum is a must-see when visiting Naples. The snack bar is nice, too!

The museum was a 15 minute walk from my hotel and I visited on a Sunday morning without making a reservation. Your temperature is checked on arrival and you re required to wear a mask at all times.
The scale of the museum is unbelievable with a great collection of artefacts, that captivate your imagination.
The special exhibition of mosaics was well wither the visit, and you are required to wear protectors over your footwear.
The museum was not that busy first thing on a Sunday morning, but it was a welcome escape from the city heat of Naples, and pure escapism for three hours.

It's common logic that if you visit Naples you have to visit that museum. It's worth 100%! Try not to be very tiered as you have to walk at least 2-3 hours all around the museum to see all these masterpieces. Amazing sculptures, amazing frescos and mosaics. Greek and Roman civilisation at the best moments! Don't miss it.

Some amazing sculptures, mosaics, and artefacts in this museum. It’s worth going to if you’re in Naples and especially so if you visit any of the ruins because a lot of the museums showcases have been brought from Pompeii and Herculaneum. I think it’s about €15 per adult, but they do a reduced price of €6 if you’re between 18-25, and other senior and group discounts too.

A GREAT place to spend a Sunday AM as part of the free museums scheme the first Sunday of the month. So glad I came here first as there was a huge queue outside when I left about 11:45AM.
Room layout is confusing but there are English placards everywhere to translate what you’re seeing. Incredible collection of goods from Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as beautiful mosaics. The “Secret Room” is entertaining. Also recommend the exhibit on floor mosaics that costs €1.50. Absolutely stunning. The Hall of the Sundials is gorgeous, and has an interesting exhibit on the Byzantine Empire. Lots of sculptures, pottery, frescoes, etc to review.

Bonjour,

Grazie.

Are most of the Pompeii artifacts on display, on loan, or in the back "archives"? I'd like to know before we plan a visit whether we will get to see significant Pompeii artifacts, including the plaster cast bodies.

Hi, the MANN has lots of artifacts from Pompeii. Be aware that not all rooms are opened at all times (we went several times and this last time both the frescoes room and the cabinete segretto were closed in the afternoon). Overall, it seems mornings are better to ensure more rooms are open to the public.
