We stumbled upon this on the last day of our weekend break, not being the kind of travellers with a tick list, and found it well worth the stumble! We decided to forego the guide or audio guide in favour of just drinking in what we could - and there was lots to interest and fascinate. I was particularly drawn... More

I say that mostly for myself. I've finally learned to accept Italy on her terms, so when we visited recently we were grateful for what we could see, didn't regret what was closed, and tried to supplement our experience by reading from a guidebook. The biggest thrill (and let-down) for me was that the Gabinetto Secreto was open. I've never... More

We came here on a Saturday morning and the entrance hall was busy with a small Q but the waiting time wasn't too bad. However, when we got to the ticket booth, we were informed that the 12€ pp entrance couldn't be paid by card so being low on cash, we had to go and find a cash machine in... More

This museum is very nice. Lot's of things to do and to see. It does just give an idea of what is still under the dust in Ercolano or Pompei.... Plan 3 hours minimum to make it short.... of course longer if you want to see all.

Very interesting collection, things that you would not see anywhere else. My biggest disappointment is that when we came around 11:30 am on a Saturday, they ran out of audio guides. This is kind of a museum where the guide is a must. Otherwise, i would give it 5 stars.

I visited this museum through a tour to Pompeii. I didn't expect much but it turned out to be my favorite museum in Italy. The Egyptian collections were simply amazing and stunning. It was worth a visit just to see them.

Most museums and tourist sites in this region are extremely badly organized. If you want to save yourself annoyance, time and money, your best bet is to search the internet before setting out from home for the right level l of information and detail and download or possibly print out. You'll be glad with hindsight. There are virtually no English... More

Best to not plan a visit as the staff are happy to close sections at no notice. The audio guides are of doubtful value as very few items are covered by the guide. The contents are wonderful however and make the visit worthwhile. Best to visit post Pompei and or Herculaneum for context purposes.

Well worth a visit, but very large and excellent collection. We had a guide, and it helped a lot, to focus on some of the highlights. Plus, in concert with visits to Pompeii and Ercolano, it provided terrific context. We went to the museum in between those visits, and it was really helpful in getting the full picture, and for...
