Overview
More
The Monumental Complex of St. Chiara, including the Church, the Monastery and the Convent, had been raised since 1310 to 1328 by the will of the King Roberto d’Angio and his wife Sancia of Majorca. The sovereigns, both devoted to St. Francis of Assisi and St. Chiara, wanted to build a Franciscan citadel that housed in the Convent the Clarisses and in the contiguous Monastery the Friars Minor. The Church, central nucleus of the whole complex, rose with the title of Saint Host or Sacred Body of Christ, dedication suggested by the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena, happened in 1264; the denomination changed immediately in Santa Chiara, probably for the extraordinary number of Clarisses introduces in the Convent.

Once past the grumpy admissions man, the cloister is well worth a leisurely stroll. The tiling is astonishing - all over the columns, borders and seats. Vines and olives make for a very tranquil setting. There's the basilica to visit also, and a partly excavated...More

You wouldn't think the convent and cloister was bombed in 1943 but it was. The cloister is well worth a visit as it is covered in majolica tiles depicting scenes of one-time everyday life. The many columns are also covered in the colourful tiles.

This cloister has very unique and exquisite tile ceramic work on its columns, benches and vertical panels. They depict pastoral scenes of old Naples and Campania. Murals and frescoes deal with religious stories. This is very unique and beautiful work. A must see. You get...More

The courtyard to this church is quite spectacular and feels very quiet and secluded with the hassle and bustle of Naples just outside. The church itself is rebuilt after being bombed and is interesting from that point of view. a small museum houses old statues.

An amazing place, pretty and relaxing. Right in the historic centre of Napoli. Not only the 14th century cloister is extraordinary but also the ancient greek / roman excavations.

The Church and Cloisters of Santa Chiara is an amazing oasis of peace and tranquility right in the heart of Naples. The gardens in the cloisters, and the majolica tile-decorated pillars, are wonderful. There is a good bookshop/giftshop, a nice little cafe that sells produce...More
