Understated location to visit, far better than the other castles in Naples. Sant'Elmo sits on a hill above the city and is easily reached by the funiculars of which two are convenient for the castle. It's a pity there isn't any information available at the castle but even so it's well worth a visit. The views are spectacular, the castle... More

Finding the entrance to the castle is a little tricky but once inside the signage is very poor and its not obvious what to do! We took the lift up to the castle, walked round the walls experiencing the great views. Instead of getting the lift down, we walked down the ramp / drive that is next to the clock.... More

The views are the thing to see from the Castel Sant'Elmo - a panorama of the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, and the surrounding towns around Naples.

The views are fantastic looking out across Naples and beyond. You don't get to visit much of the castle itself although there is a good museum inside showing Neapolitan art through the 20th century. But go for the views.

The funicular on one side was under maintenance, so I walked up cobbled streets until I found the halfway point where another funicular was operating to the top. From there it's approximately 500 metres to the entrance to the Castle down some poorly signposted streets. That said, once on the parapets of the castle, everything fades away. The view is... More

The wall walks of this old castle offer 360 degree panoramic views of Naples, spectacular even by the standards of this amazing city.

We visited Naples in January, and the day we came to the castle it was sunny with blue skies. There were only 10 or so other people walking around at the top, so it was very peaceful enjoying the amazing views.

We visited here before seeing the Certosa di San Marino which is literally next door. You will need to climb quite a few steep inclines to reach the top but if you can you'll be rewarded with panoramic views across the whole of Naples. There's not much to see here but the castle is well preserved although you are unable... More

From the bay of Naples we could see Castel Sant'Elmo high above the city and just had to go there. It was a long way but the funicular railway made the journey different and exciting. Once there we went straight to the top of the castle....in a lift!!!! That was a first! The castle is enormous and there are people... More

It's not possible to visit the castle rooms, but you can walk and take great pictures of Naples gulf, with Vesuvio vulcan, islands and of course Naples. My wife and I visited it with our 5 months baby and his stroller. Get the metro, walk few minutes and simply enjoy the panorama!
