A small and charming church with gold leaf ceiling in the gold room and interesting murals. Quiet in October.

Little signs shows the way to Chapel of St. Mary. If you are lucky you can get in when nobody else want to visit it. Sitting in the silence of the gold and blue chapel you will feel the bless of Mary. Duomo and St. Fracesco were also impressive churches but this one was so special to us. Here as well, take into consideration siesta time.

The Annuziata is nice but tucked away inside is the gold chapel with the painting of the Immaculate Conception by Pulzone. It was here in exile that Pope Pius IX formulated what was to become the dogmatic procamalation on the Immaculate Conception.

We visited Gaeta by bus from Sperlonga. We passed by his church and decided to go in. There is some beautiful architecture and it is a lovely church. Not a must see, but a nice sight of passing through.

This is one of the largest churches in Gaeta, located in the Older side of town. If you visit, make sure you make a reservation to see the Golden Chapel too.

I had the opportunity to attend a mass ceremony, it was in Italian but the mass was beautifully done.

You wouldn't know it from the outside, but this is a beautiful church on par, if not better, than the Cathedral up the hill.

The church with its Gold Chapel with many wonderful paintings is a must see. A lot of history surrounding the architecture and items within.

The reason I came to this sanctuary is because I'd read about a small interior chapel, with a gilded ceiling resembling that of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.
Pope Pius IX fled to Gaeta during the Republican revolt and remained there for 9 months. During those months he came to the small interior chapel to pray daily and it bore great fruit: the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
The chapel remains a gem of Criscuolo's 16th century work. It's moving from both an artistic and religious sense and is completely free and open...

Walking along the embankment in Gaeta, we could not pass by this ancient cathedral. There was a service going on there, so we quietly looked into it and went on for a walk. All the beauty is hidden inside, but the outside looks rather dilapidated, but don’t let this fool you, in Italy it’s like that all the time, especially in the South.
