After many visits to Rome, I must admit that I stroll along Via Dei Fori Imperiali only if I have to. Fighting with crowds and arrogant trinket sellers is not worth for me. The best way to see the forums and the Colosseum is to go inside, not to take a glimpse from the street. Having said that, I am still grateful for the opportunity to take several good shots of the Colosseum from the distance and the easiest thing to do it is from Via dei Fori Imperiali.

This is the major road that cuts through the heart of the Roman Forums linking the Colosseum with Piazza Venezia. It was built between 1924-32 and passes by important ruins of Ancient Roman forums as well as other building ruins on both sides. When walking the street you can view the forum ruins quite well. There are statues of various Roman Emperors as well. Views of the Colosseum, Trajan's Market and Column are quite good. Several churches are located along the street and in the area as well. You can easily spend an hour leisurely walking the street and several more to half a day sightseeing nearby.

Via dei Fori Imperiali is the main boulevard leading from Piazza Venezia to Colosseum. There are lots of historical ruins like Forum on both sides of the road. During the day of visit there, temporary platforms are being built along both sides for holding sport functions. Highly recommended.

Stretching from Piazza Venezia, this street would lead straight into the Colosseo. But along the way, be taken away by the beauty of ancient Roman architecture. Enjoy a short walk coming from Piazza Venezia: on the left side, you can spot Foro Traiano, and Foro Augustus, while on the right side, there is the Foro di Cesare, Roman Forum, and the Basilica di Santa Francesca Romana. There are benches along the way to sit down and rest or just enjoy the sights/people-watch.

The Via dei Fori Imperiali (Street of the Imperial Forums) runs in a straight line from Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum. The street was created by Mussolini, who mercilessly ordered medieval, Renaissance and more recent structures to be bulldozed to make the street, demolishing churches and people's homes alike. It runs by (actually, through) the Imperial Forums (founded by Emperors Trajan, Augustus, Vespasian, and Nerva) and separates them from the Forum of Caesar, which abuts the Roman Forum; the creation of the street also negatively impacted these ancient archaeological sites and the haste with which the road was constructed led to important archaeological information being lost. For the last few years, traffic has been restricted on the street. It is pretty amazing to starting walking down the street and see the Colosseum looming in the distance. But, it is tragic to think about what was lost in the creation of this road.

Street which goes from Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum. The good side is that you can marvel at the surrounding architecture, the bad side is that it is just a road and even worse a road built by Mussolini which involved demolishing unique ancient architecture.

I read about this place on Tripadvisor before we left - so glad I did because it saved us a lot of time and money!! Our Uber (which are super easy to use in Rome) dropped us at the Piazza Venezia & we walked up to the Colosseum. This was without question the best travel tip we took with us. Looking into the ruins of the Roman Forum on BOTH sides of the road as we made our way towards the Colosseum was incredible. You could get very close to the ruins & you could see right into the Roman Forum that you pay for & wait hours to get into!!
This is an absolutely MUST see - & forget about visiting the Forum. Only wish I knew this tip when we visited Rome last time (& paid to go into the Forum).

You must take a stroll along this wide road which is so rich in ancient history. Extraordinary area. From Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum, there are ruins and statues on either side, so you will have to walk both sides to appreciate it all. Seemed to be restricted to pedestrians and buses only, or was when we were there. Allow an hour to soak in all the sights.
