Neighbourhood: Vatican / Borgo
Frocked priests, colorful Swiss Guards, insistent souvenir shop owners, flag-waving tour guides, and pilgrims from around the world. This is the Vatican and Borgo, Rome's most recognized neighbourhood which acts as Vatican City's front yard. Aside from the souvenir boutiques and a few food spots, the only business conducted here is papal. In the daytime, the tiny medieval sector bustles with holy activity, as visitors vie for elbow room, or stand in line for a visit. Once the sun sets, the neighbourhood is transformed into a quiet and picturesque hamlet.

I have been trying to get here since I first came to Rome back in 2009 and this was finally the first time. We were jet lagged but made the trek because we’d already bought the tickets. We went at 6pm and that was a great time as it wasn’t too hot or too crowded. There was a lot of steps (or rather walkways with a high elevation) which wasn’t great for my jet lagged self but I was really glad I went. It was incredibly thorough and informative. Had my husband not been literally falling asleep I would have definitely stopped at the cafe on the top level and enjoyed some wine with a great view.

Among the wonders of the capital must not miss a visit to the monumental Castel Sant'Angelo that "tells" the history of Rome through its fascinating rooms, collections, works of art. During the visit you can relive the transformations that the castle has undergone over the centuries: from a mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, to a fortress, prison and papal residence. From the official website, by purchasing the ticket, you can take advantage of a free guided tour by the museum staff. Francesco, la nostra guida, è davvero il top!!! Very prepared, friendly and empathetic. Da non perdere!

I’ve been to Rome 10 times over the past 25 years and somehow this was the first time I made it to the castle. Man was I missing out.

First of all some of the best views I’ve ever seen in Rome were from this castle. Secondly, it was super simple to wander around and listen to the audio guide to learn more. And thirdly, maybe because of the rain, it wasn’t super crowded so I actually got time to enjoy each exhibit and room.

We went there on the first Sunday of the month (so free admission), we made a very nice visit with beautiful views of Rome.
Despite an hour wait, we loved it. It is a beautiful place and the wait is worth it.

This spot is an absolute gem that exceeded all expectations! From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with thoughtful decor creating the perfect vibe. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made sure every detail was taken care of. The menu offered a fantastic variety, and each dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The standout dish was truly unforgettable and worth every bite. Whether for a casual outing or a special occasion, this place delivers an exceptional experience. I can’t wait to return and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a memorable visit!

It was a very picturesque castle with a amazing view of the Vatican City State's St. Peter's Basilica on the top. The castle itself was very interesting with amazing panoramic views of Rome and the Vatican City. The Castle had lots of historic artifects, it was easy to navigate, but for people with limited mobility it may cause a slight issue. Overall The Mausolium of Hadrian (also known as Castel Sant'Angelo) is definitely worth visiting for 13 EUR for Adults and free of charge for U18s.

Usually the bridge to the Castel Sant'Angelo makes one feel overwhelmed with the grandeur and beauty of arriving at this famous site. Unfortunately, this area was under construction on our most recent visit, so we just marched along with the crowds to enter the historic site. The original tomb of Hadrian has now been changed a bit since it was converted to a fortress and museum, but it is fun to climb to the different levels and see all the views of the city, while spotting lovely angel decor throughout. This is a striking architectural construction, and is a nice site to tour for a few hours in Rome.

This was by far one of the best places we visited bar the main attraction such as the coliseum. It is a very interesting museum and inexpensive to enter, even more so if you're a student from the EU. Compared to other sites in Rome it was nice and quiet, which was a nice break from the crowds and the views from the top were gorgeous, you could see all across the city.

Castel Sant'Angelo has served as a mausoleum, escape castle and prison in its nearly 2,000-year history. Today it is an interesting museum with a beautiful view of the city of Rome and the Vatican with St. Peter's Basilica. We downloaded an audio guide to the mobile phone in advance, which was worth it due to the lack of labels in the structure. Time required: 90 - 120 minutes

We were able to get tickets on a Saturday afternoon at the gate. We couldn’t yet check into our Airbnb so we stashed our suitcases in one of the locker storage places and headed out to explore for a few hours.

I really loved this experience, it was probably my favorite thing in Rome, if not our 9 day trip across Italy.

There was a comfortable amount of people in there, not squashed in like at the Colosseum.

Lovely route through the building. Some absolutely stunning vistas with tremendous views of the Vatican and city of Rome.

Definitely worth the 16euro entry fee. Kids were free.
