- greektraveller13Cardiff, United Kingdom260 contributionsEverything about this church is stunning. Definitely a church worth visitingThis is the oldest church in Rome in what is the oldest part of Rome. This is a place that is well worth seeing and you cannot help but pick up an amazing feeling here. Some of the materials used in the building are from the baths of Caracella! Even the paintings on the outside of the church are amazing! There are fantastic mosaics on the church Definitely somewhere worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023

Once you go past the walls with embedded grave markers and through the large doors you get a surprise. This is a very large church with an exceptional history. Started in 212 and added over the next 1000 years to be the building you see. You have to be impressed as from the outside it doesn't look much then inside it's a TARDIS. It is located on a public square by the same name in the heart of Trastevere and is a neat church to visit when sightseeing in the area. Having been reconstructed and expanded a handful of times over the centuries, there is a variety of architectural styles on display at Santa Maria including a medieval tower, portico entrance topped with statues, fronting a mosaic decorated facade. Within, you will find column lined nave, Cosmateque marble floor, coffered, patterned ceiling with a nice pattern and very impressive apse mosaics known as the 'Coronation of the Virgin Mary' by Pietro Cavallini. - MidwestKathMDetroit, Michigan1,088 contributionsBeautiful historic basilica should be seen and enjoyed!Santa Maria is considered the likely first official place of Christian worship in Rome. Its original church building was completed in 340 A.D. Through the centuries, it was expanded and renovated. As you enter the building, note the fragments of ancient friezes. Within the basilica, three naves are divided by 22 granite columns. Mosaics were added in the 12th century, the same year the bell tower was constructed. The floor mosaics date back to the 13th century, while the gilded ceiling dates to the 17th century. I took my time checking out all the details. I sat and looked up to the octagonal ceiling painting "Assumption of the Virgin" by Domenichino, surrounded by gilded coffers. I looked down and around to see the beautiful mosaic flooring. I walked to the back of the church for the long shot up the center aisle and the main altar with "The "Coronation of the Virgin"mosaic above. Lots of other details to enjoy as well.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 24, 2024

For a long time we had been wanting to make a more thorough second visit.
There are always so many people, and so many liturgies that the custodians, worried about checking the coming and going of poor people trying to be assisted and helped, do not allow you to move a little bit to study the details of the monument, and even take a photo.
Better to avoid Sundays and Saturdays and go on a weekly morning, around 11: am.
We went twice in a row.
This time we dedicated ourselves to the study of all the side chapels.
Apart from the two wonderful chapels Altemps and Avila, unfortunately all the others are of little artistic value.
There are also a couple of chapels in a complete state of neglect.
This unfortunately disappointed us very much, as well as the lack of control of the people who enter only to find the comfort of a chair in the shade and then make noise.
Everything else, of course, is spectacular.
It is a splendid church in which various styles melt and merge together, from Romanesque to Baroque.
The golden mosaics of the apse and the transept are splendid.
Magnificent the floor and the coffered ceiling. Worth a visit.

Churches in Rome were not built without a reason. Something symbolic was going to happen. In this case, an oily fountain scored. Scientists say it was oil. However, the Romans did not develop oil, but decided to build a church. In the long run, Catholicism turned out to be a more profitable business than oil. He has been feeding the Eternal City for 2 millennia, and the oil of the Saudis has been only one century. The Church of St. Mary in Trastevere is one of the oldest in Rome, although you can't tell from the look of it. It is clear why. The present appearance of the church has acquired since the XII century. There is something not Roman about her. The portico by Carlo Fontana (he also worked on the fountain in front of the church) and the square campanella at the base evoke associations with Venice rather than with the Eternal City. And the interior gives the illusion that it came to the Orthodox, not Catholics. The apse with a golden mosaic by Pietro Cavallini would suit Byzantine churches. The impression is enhanced by the relief ceiling light on the ceiling. All gilded, of course. In general, there is a reason to say Wow!

Its roots dating from the 3rd century AD before Christianity was adopted by Constantine the Great, the church has Byzantine heritage. Artistic jewels can be found outside and inside. It is worth spending a bit of time to appreciate the differences in style over the centuries.

Beautiful building in a charming square in Trastevere. You can sit in the cafe opposite (cafe de Marzio) and enjoy the view of the very old church. We happened to be there when they were preparing to put on a concert of Mozart’s requiem. We came back that evening and enjoyed the free concert which was of really high quality. Pews are very uncomfortable but fortunately the concert was only just over an hour.

A wonderful church, one of the oldest in Rome. Beautiful ceiling with golden inlays, and there are a number of truely stunning frescos, particularly in the side chapels. There are many interesting features about the church, and if in Trastevere, this one should not be missed.

This was our favorite place in Trastevere. It's one of the oldest churches in Rome, and very different from the Baroque churches that predominate in this city. The mosaics have such bright colors and are so vibrant that it's hard to believe they are so old. There is a lively piazza just outside the church.

Another beautiful church in Rome, in the Trastevere neighborhood. The gold plated ceilings, the ornate altar, the walls and even the mosaic tiled floors are stunning. We were lucky enough to have Mass here with our group.

Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest churches in Rome, is famous for its magnificent mosaics. The 12th and late 13th-century mosaics in the apse are especially impressive. The colors are so bright it is hard to believe the age of the mosaics.
Too bad I couldn’t spend too much time there because of the funeral (tourists were not allowed to stay inside).

Can I get in on Sunday night between masses? Schedule lists 5:30 PM and 6:45 PM masses Sunday. I'm not sure how long masses last—will there be 15-20 minutes in between to visit? I have a tight schedule in Rome but would love to see the artwork here. Thanks!
Written October 17, 2019
I can't answer with certainty, but my guess would be that there is a short break between masses to allow people from the first mass to leave and people to come into the next mass, Regardless, I have come in to mass at many churches and either sat down or stood in the back or on the side. Amost all tourists do. Just try not to be disruptive. I usually just sit and look from there and enjoy the overall experience. I can tell you that this church, unlike most, has a large crowd of people who actually come to pray, even outnumbering the tourists, who are numerous, as well. The two times I went the church was either full or almost full. At any rate, they all co-exist peacefully amd it is a wonderful experience. It is a lovely and spirtual place, whether you are Catholic or not. You should not miss it, if it fits into your schedule.

I will appreciate learning the hours on Sundays on April before Easter, including whether it is closed during lunch time. Thanks!

We arrived in Trastevere on a Sunday in October and walked in just after 11:00 during mass. We set down and attended mass for about 15 minutes and then returned after lunch for pictures. We also visited during the day on Monday and Tuesday.

3. ¿Tengo, como católico, que seguir algún trámite previo para poder asistir --NO ME IMPORTA QUE LA MISA SEA EN ITALANO--?

Is the church open in the middle of the day? Some websites say it is open all day long, others indicate a midday closure of 1pm - 3.30pm.
Many thanks!

Will I be able to use a walker or wheelchair in this church? Thanks

Yes, the church is fairly open with a wide rear aisle and benches instead of chairs. There may be a threshold at the door you'll have to navigate but there are no chairs.

I would like to attend Sunday Mass while visiting in April but cannot locate the Mass times online. Does anyone know the times Mass is celebrated? Also, is Mass celebrated on Sunday at St. John Lateran in April?
Thank you!
Written March 1, 2015
Hallo
With some help from my Italian colleague I can inform you that masses are held at 9 am and 5.30 pm on weekdays. On Saturdays there's an additional at 8 pm. On Sundays the masses are held at 8.30 am, 10 am, 11.30 am, 5.30 pm and 18.45 am (the two latter on Sunday are held according to the Byzantine protocol). Confession time is always before and after the mass.
Enjoy,
Mosse
