Once you are on the Aventin Hill, find gorgeous Giardino Degli Aranci - Orange Garden - with an amazing view. Then go a bit further and you will see a queue at the big door - this is it. Look through the keyhole and you will see Vatican, which is 4.5 km away, looking so close like just behind the... More

This experience is definitely a do not miss! I did not know about it until the tour guide from Walks of Italy took us as part of the "hidden gems of Rome." Through this little key hole, you will see the Knights of Malta property and the Vatican. Truly a spectacular sight to behold. It is definitely off of the... More

After spending an afternoon in the Giardino degli Aranci we walked up to find the door, saw the line and took our places. What a perfect view! I could not get my camera or iPhone to focus so was only able to get a mental picture and it is damn great!

We hadn't heard of this place and were taken there on a tour from Angel Tours (Eco Tour). We were not told what we would see and just to get in line and wait for a turn to have a look through the key hole. I am sorry that the surprise is spoiled here but it is a really much... More

Make the trip from Piazzale Ugo la Maifa via the Avetine to the villa, now closed to the public and those who sneak a peek through the keyhole in the large doors barring your entrance will be rewarded with a unique vista, available only from here and steadfastly uncapturable by camera or phone.

Arrived in Rome on sunday evening. Shared a taxi with a great american guy. After talking all the way from the airport this guy not only paid for our fare but for a quick tour of city. He took us down a street then stopped suddenly and told us to get out. He then took us over to a door... More

My husband and I were staying in the San Anselmo/Aventine area, and loved walking the neighborhoods. We walked up on the hill, through the Orange Garden, looked out over Rome and the Tiber River, slipped in and out of Santa Maria del Priorato - incredible. We came to a small square near the church, and there was the non descript... More

We stopped by here on our Segway Tour of the Ancient Sites of Rome. The view thru the keyhole was a nice surprise. and how few others have seen it. Just another special spot we shared and a great 'moment' in out tour experience and Rome visit.

Staying in Aventine

Neighbourhood Profile
Aventine
Contrary to the chaos of the city, the Aventine is Rome’s oasis. A neighbourhood made up of a patchwork of ancient churches, hidden gardens, private homes and embassies, peace and quiet is top priority and the vibe definitely friends and family. Take a walk around the Aventine and you’ll find a treasure hunt of surprises like the clever little keyhole at the Knights of Malta entrance (the only place you’ll find a line) along with Parco Savello (Giardino degli Aranci) next to the ancient Santa Sabina church. Keep your eyes on the 1960s architecture, several modern buildings are built atop Rome’s original 4th century BC wall.
