This ancient gate is beautiful. Located near the San Giovanni metro stop it is surrounded by some beautiful gardens. We’re glad we stopped here on the way to the basilica.
A massive gate in the ancient Aurelian Walls of Rome. The gate has two gigantic round towers, and was built around 273, at the same time as the wall. As of early September 2018, there is no access, but you can see the gate, front and back, from the sidewalk.
You can still see much of the outside of the gate from various places. The best viewpoint is to stop in the small cafe which overlooks it and sit in one of outside tables. The view is great. You cannot currently enter as there appears to be extensive restoration work going on…
A gate dating back thousands of years that still stands. easy to walk right by and not appreciate. Would recommend at least taking a second to take it in
Dating back almost 2 millennia, this beautiful gate still stands next to the amazing San Giovanni basilica. Worth a quick visit.
