When Pius XII ordered a thorough excavation of the area under the High Altar in St. Peter's Basilica, twisting stone passages were found leading to an ancient Roman necropolis, which contained chambers 10- to 15-feet wide with preserved frescoes and mosaics.

I've never been down in the Necropolis before where St. Peter's tomb is located. It has an odd entryway inside St. Peter's - you need to know what you are looking for but it's a great way to exit the cathedral on your way out.

One of the neatest things we've done in Rome, you need to go to the Vatican website and go to Scavi Tour and submit your request via email as early as possible when you know when you will be in Rome. There are many days...More

Fascinating look at the excavations, tombs, artifacts under St. Peter's Basilica. Took about 1 hour total as Vatican guide took us on a path underground through narrow areas, enclosed caves, etc My wife had to leave tour group halfway through due to claustrophobia. Tour ended...More

The site is essentially an archeological dig site underneath the present day Basilica and the current cathedral is actually built over the top of two previous versions of it. A Necropolis is an ancient burial ground and indeed this one used to be like an...More

My mom found out about this and miraculously got three tickets for her, my brother and me for the Vatican Scavi tour. We had read so much about how it was the highlight of everyone's trip, so we were very excited. We weren't disappointed, but...More

After applying by email from their website had a confirmation next morning. For €13 pp for a 90 minute guided tour it was excellent value. We obeyed instructions and didn't take bags (they say bulky bags, so we were unsure when they became bulky) Others...More

The Scavi Tour under the Vatican was a little disappointing. The majority of the tour was looking at empty crypts and dirt walkways. I'd only recommend it to see the bones of Saint Peter. That was a surprisingly emotional experience for a non-Catholic. (The Vatican...More

How do I get to the entrance for this? I heard it was confusing and not in the main line for Basilica.

I received instructions as well but it's confusing when everything is so massive. I took a cab from my hotel and told them it was for the necropolis tour, and the cabbie knew exactly where to drop me off. It was great! They... More

Thank you, BCfromVancouver, for these most informative instructions. We have a reservation for May. I have 2 more questions that perhaps you can help with. My friend will have a camera bag with her. I have told her that she will not be allowed to take it on the tour, but we are doing other things that day so she will have it. 1) Is there somewhere that she will be allowed to leave it before we take the tour? and 2) if not, does that mean she needs to go through the (longer?) basilica security line to be able to check her bag?

When we went in there were some people with reasonable sized back packs, they were just asked to wear them on their fronts. Small bags will be no problem
