About
When Pius XII ordered a thorough excavation of the area under the High Altar in St. Peter's Basilica, twisting stone passages were found leading to an ancient Roman necropolis, which contained chambers 10- to 15-feet wide with preserved frescoes and mosaics.

Neighbourhood: Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
How to get there
  • Repubblica - Teatro dell'Opera • 2 min walk
  • Termini • 6 min walk

It is recommended to have a background about the place’s history before the visit. This necropolis can be visited along with the basilica.

Lovely tour!
Sep. 2020
This was a fascinating tour!!! Our lovelky tour guide (that I cannot recall his name unfortunately), had such a huge knowledge of the Necropolis of Vatican.
He was happy that I was Greek (as many of his words he used were Greek and he kind of included me in the tour)... Interraction is always a good thing.
We were a group of 6 due to COVID-19, but I believe we all enjoyed that tour.
Attention on the detail and huge knowledge kept us hanging on his every word!
Really enjoyed it and all the preautions for the pandemic was in place accordingly.
Fantastic!

NO REFUNDS - EVEN THOUGH ITALY ON LOCKDOWN WITH CORONAVIRUS
Mar. 2020
I was so amazed and disappointed that the Scavi office refused to refund our tickets or even give a credit for a future visit! Our tickets were for March 15th, 2020. The entire country of Italy is on lockdown because of Coronavirus, with all public places closed including restaurants etc. The USA has banned incoming flights from Italy. This is clearly an unusual situation, out of everyone's control, yet they refused a refund and even sent an extremely rude response, "Sorry but our offices are open and we don’t refund the entrance." Pretty much, tough luck.

Amazing tour
Feb. 2020 • Couples
My husband and I were so excited for this tour and it did not disappoint. We booked it about 2 months before our trip and it was quite simple. We showed up 15 minutes before our scheduled tour, went through security, and started right on time. Our tour guide spoke English well and was extremely knowledgeable. I’d say the tour lasted about an hour. Afterwards, we were able to walk up into Saint Peter’s Basilica. We were happy about this because the wait to get in had been about 2 hours all day. We personally did the tour for religious purposes but I would suggest it for anyone who is interested in history as well. This tour is definitely a hidden gem of Rome. Bring some water if you get warm easily because it was very humid underground.

Must visit
Mar. 2019
The "scavi" (excavations) tour of the Vatican Necropolis is one of the not-to-be-missed opportunities in Rome, but it has to be booked well in advance. The whole reason for the site, size, and splendor of the world's largest and most famous church is revealed here. Because of the size, only groups of a dozen are allowed in at a time. Make the effort and make the visit!

Wow what an experience
Nov. 2019
I booked this tour 6 months ahead as last time I was in Rome I missed out. We were booked on a tour at 9.30 so went into St Peter's Basilica early before the crowds and then met our tour.

I wasn't sure what to expect and as I had visited St Peter's several times before and had no idea what was below. So was very surprised to see the ancient burial sites and learnt about life in ancient Rome, and saw the section where St Peter is buried. After leaving the Necropolis you are in Crypt below the main level of St. Peter's Basilica (you can hear the singing from Mass if you are there are the right time); the Crypt has the tombs of the many popes and some beautiful chapels.

Well worth it for something to enhance your Vatican visit. No photos allowed.

Very cool experience
Nov. 2019 • Couples
Booked our tickets 5 months ago on the Scavi Vatican website and was not disappointed at all. They provide you with a date and time depending on your preferred language and your available timeframe for when you will be in Rome and it was very easy to confirm and pay online. This was a very cool experience walking on the same roads as they did back in 1AD and seeing the resting place of St Peter. Our guide was very passionate and knowledgeable and it was also great knowing that you were only one of the few 200 people that get to experience when there are thousands and thousands of people right above at St Peter’s each day. If you are able to book these tickets I would definitely recommend it!
