This place always looked enigmatic to us from the outside on previous visits to Bologna. What does " Luogo dato agli spettacoli diurni" mean exactly ? It turns out that this was for many years an outdoor theatre. It was inaugurated in 1810 on the site of a monastery suppressed in Napoleonic times. In the inner courtyard past the lobby you can see vestiges of the monastery as well as a grape vine reputed to be over 200 years old. The theatre was renovated in 1995. Prices here are usually much more affordable than other venues such as the opera house or the Manzoni theatre with tickets often in the 20 - 30 euro range. Musical performances are enjoyable for non Italian speakers.

Unfortunately when we were twice in Bologna, the theater was closed, no performances. However it has got a very imposant facade on the Via Indenpendenza.

This building has an impressive facade facing Via dell'Indipendenza. It is across the street from a small garden which holds the statue of Garibaldi on horseback.

This theatre is located along the city’s central avenue, via dell’Indipendenza.
The theatre was opened in 1810 as an open-air theatre. It was built on the site of a 16th-century convent of which some parts are still visible today.
At some stages in the 20th century, the theatre was transformed into a cinema. Now it is again a theatre showing national and international theatre and dance shows.

This estraordinary facility located in the old downtown part of Bologna should be required viewing for any theatre goer. It is the home theatre of the Bibbienna family and has remarkable history for those priviledged to get a complete tour.

On Independence Road and in front of the Garibaldi monument. Very theatrical and pompous facade. If you look towards the cathedral coming from the station, the mobile antennas make a strange contrast with the figures and the winged victory that top the façade.
