If you’ve seen other cathedrals in the region, this pales in comparison. I think the more spectacular ones are outside of bologna like Parma and Modena (although the Modena one is under repair)

In the heart of Bologna is the Basilica of San petronio, a huge church with interesting architecture. The entrance is free. There are security men in the entrance as well as inside. Photos are not allowed but they told us when we already had a...More

This place is a true repository of art and culture, as well as being an important church in the city. The only difficulty we encountered was listening to a concert and the acoustic is so great that the sounds made by choir and organ tended...More

The sheer size of the inside took us by surprise. It is both vast and stunning with so much detail to admire.

This Basilica was not completed on the outside. It is only half way done. Inside it is a typical large cathedral. I did not think it was super special but worth looking inside.

The Basilica of San Petronio is a very large imposing and interesting building which we could not enter during our last visit to Bologna. It overlooks and dominates the Piazza Maggiore. I was determined not to miss it on this trip. It so happened our...More

You couldn't come to Bologna and not visit the Basilica, but we were disappointed. We've been to many cathedrals around the world and this one just didn't do it for us.
