Stunning mosaics - even better than the pictures! Worth spending time in and getting to know the fascinating history behind the world class mosaics.

After I got lost on my last day in Ravenna, I finally found this small gem. It was a pity it was closed for renovation so I couldn't see what's so special on the inside.

We went here as it was one of the 5 attractions listed on our bulk entrance ticket and we blown away by what we saw. The mosaics are exquisite and so colourful for such an age. The photos give you a hint but are no substitute for being there. If pushed for time make sure you choose this in preference... More

This site was lower on our list than many of the others, but we had time and were right there and had already bought the combination ticket so why not? Well, if we had missed it we would have missed something fabulous! This small Baptistry probably started life as a Roman bath house. Like the other great mosaic sites in... More

Seeing a child-like Jesus being baptised in the river on the ceiling surrounded by others is extraordinary and we are not religious. Colours, luminosity and brightness of mosaics are a sight to behold.

We found this to be another beautiful example of ancient mosaic work. Quiet, not too crowded, and you can get fairly close to the mosaics. We are early in our tour, yet to see the other sites , but this was quite awesome.

It's called Battistero degli Ortodossi for a reason. - the art has a very pronounced Orthodox Christian touch, more than the other sites, I would say 9 I should know, as I am born and raised in an Orthodox Christian country). The arts has some interesting mixtures of Christian and pagan symbols and representations.

Right next to Ravenna's Duomo, this baptistry, built in the 4th to the 5th century, contains a mosaic depicting the earliest representation in art of the baptismal of Jesus by John the Baptist. What is quite interesting—and unexpected—is that, in the mosaic, to Jesus' right, there is a personification of the River Jordan, ready to hand him a green cloth... More

An octagonal baptistery dating back to the 5th Century containing one of the oldest mosaic scenes of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the river Jordan. You can sit and take in the many amazing mosaics, including the twelve apostles. There is a marble font in the centre.

A very small and unassuming site beside the Duomo of Ravenna, but a highly important late-Roman / Byzantine site. The Orthodox Baptistery is an interesting counterpoint to the Arian Baptistery on the other side of town. Its mosaics are beautifully executed as elsewhere in Ravenna and possess their own points of interest. Christ here is a muscular man with a... More
