The red carpet no longer exists but the path is still there. It's an easy, flat, coastal hike between Rapallo and Portofino, passing through Santa Margherita de Liguria, which takes around 90 mins. Plenty to keep you interested along the way.

A great tourist day trip is take the train to Rapello and ftom there the ferry to Portofino and then walk back. With an early start you've got time to explore three of the most besutiful towns on the Liguria coast.

The ‘red carpet’ may be long gone but the walk truly is spectacular! We walked from Rapallo to Portofino - about 10 km and returned by ferry. There are challenging bits, for sure, but nothing disappoints! The views are glorious - the walk along “The Path of Kisses” portion winds thru a densely wooded area that of higher elevation. So glad we took on the challenge.

Red carpet or no red carpet, the walk from Rapallo to Portofino was breathtaking at every step. If you go from Rapallo to Santa Margherita it will take you about 50 minutes but if you want to go on to Portofino, it's about two hours in all, passing the tiny fishing village of San Michele di Pagana on the way. You can always get the bus back if you don't fancy walking. The views were stunning all the way and from Santa Margherita to Portofino, you do the Passeggiata dei Baci (Walk of Kisses) which takes you through a little wood but always with a view of the sea to your left. I loved it!

Take a water bottle, put on some comfy walking shoes and just walk the red carpet. Stop along the way at towns that interest you, have lunch, take a swim and keep going because each place is different from the others you have just walked through. Portifino is very expensive, so if you don't need to eat there it is probably better to hold off, enjoy a drink instead then catch the ferry back to where you started and enjoy the view looking back from the water towards the land. ... simply beautiful and the size of some of the super yachts!!!!! Amazing

Due to some lovely interruptions, we only made the red carpet from Rapallo to Santa Margherita. It's a lovely walk along the coast and dining in Santa Margherita made it all worthwhile. Go to the Black Stallion and to Skipper's.

Walked the carpet today and what a nice way to experience the towns on the way. Remember to take water with you! The last part takes you up on the hill side and worth the extra effort because of the spectacular views.

We arrived in Portofino by ship. There was a red carpet that we started to follow. An hour later we left Portofino, but still following the red carpet. The views are spectacular, some areas in shade and with a nice breeze. Remember to bring drinking water though, as you can walk a long way without any restaurants or cafes or even shops.

We walked the red carpet from Santa Margherita Liguira to Portofino earlier this year (May) and it was a really pleasant walk, but when we returned in September huge parts of the carpet were missing and other parts were ripped.
Such a shame and I hope they repair/replace it as it is such a novel way to mark out the walk.

I love the Red Carpet walk. The carpet has been gone for a while, but the walk is still fantastic. Every turn has amazing views of the coast, and villas and cliffs and beaches. Mostly an easy walk, and not crowded at all. It is so cool. It is a dedicated path, separated from the road. A few parts are still being repaired from last year's storm and at those places you have to walk in the road or on beautiful trails in the hills, but it is safe and this is only for a small part of the walk. Treat yourself to one of the prettiest walks in Italy.
