If the exterior wasn't stunning enough, the interior is magnificent. The fresco's and murals are jaw dropping. It was very buy when we went (Saturday morning)

The Cathedral in Bergamo is a slightly unusual building. It spans several centuries and has a mixture of styles although the west front is the most predominant being a 19th century neo classical design. This Basilica is amazing in its richness and colors. Entrance is free and you get the clear impression the whole town has been working and contributing to make this Catholic Church as glorious as possible. Different times, but one must see to appreciate Christian tradition and what it used to mean.

From the outside this basilica is Romanesque and does nor suggest the stunning baroque interior. Oddly it is situated beside a cathedral and on the other side there is another church. There must be an intriguing story behind this.Inside there is little information on the history and artworks that make up one of the most impressive churches in Northern Italy.... More

The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is absolutely stunning. The outside of the building is fabulous, but totally undersells the interior which is breath taking.
