Went on a day trip to Bergamo & La Citta Alta is brilliant, there are a lot of things to see in a stones throw from each other.

Very ambient and old city, which is eslecially beautiful when there's no crowd. There is a fine and cheap restaurant on the main square where you can get a perfect 4 formaggi and 2 glasses of wine for 18 euros only

So glad we stayed the night instead of going straight to Milan. Relaxing place, with lots of nice cafes and restos and amazing architecture.

Yes - it is a very tourist area. There will be many shops along the main walking street open. Also plenty of restaurants and bars.
