    Magnificent Villa Monastero
Visited here in mid October & whilst didn’t see the glorious summer flowers, it was still beautiful & 100% worth visiting & exploring the gardens. We were lucky as it was a cloudy/sunny day, so we were able to appreciate the beauty of it. One of the good things in visiting in October was that is was also very quite. No queues & we could walk around in peace & quiet. A very beautiful villa & thoroughly recommended.

    Excellent walk in the Garden
This Villa and Garden is a short walk outside Varenna. It is definitely worth the time to enjoy it. You can pay for the garden or the garden and villa. We did both. The garden is a beautiful landscape of trees and plantings along shore of LC. The views are stunning. The villa is a spectacular architecture with a lot of interior marble. It takes 1-2 hours to thoroughly enjoy this activity.

Beautiful walk through the gardens along the lake.
Don't miss this beautiful place even in the winter! The Villa is a short hike from Varenna ferry and then a nice walk along the lake viewing the beautiful gardens. There is a public restroom in the gardens along with a place to stop for a refreshment. Tours inside the Villa were limited to weekends only when I visited in March.

Well worth a visit in Varenna
Founded on the site of a former women’s monastery, the Villa includes a magnificent terraced garden, where many rare botanical species from across the world thrive owing to the mild climate. We went here for the gardens, no interest in the museum. It's a stunning location on the shores of the lake.

Not to be missed! Picturesque and magnificent villa and lush garden, over the lapping lake.
This was the highlight of our Lake Como holiday. Varenna is so pretty and welcoming...a true gem and Villa Monastero is the most picturesque villa of all the villas we visited. Every two steps in the magnificent garden presented a picture-worthy spot. Lavish, beautifully-tended gardens and wonderful views of the lake! A must-see for anyone visiting the area!

    Beautiful Gardens
The Villa is owned and operated by the Province of Lecco. The complex consists of the villa which has been transformed into a museum and the botanical gardens that surrounds it. Be prepared to walk. The gardens extend for nearly two km, and there are stairs and elevation changes. But the reward is some magnificent views of the lake, the mountains, and other villages. The Botanical Garden contains a wide variety of plants ranging from a simple kitchen garden to several rare species. All are marked with excellent descriptive signage. As you walk along the lake or climb the stairs, you will pass numerous statues and other elements of hardscape. The only downside was the extremely rude people who use the garden for a photo shoot. Women, and some men, often in groups of two to four, set up cameras on tripods and occupied the best viewing spots for long periods of time. Management really should control this activity because it is very frustrating when all you want is to take a quick photo, and then move on.

    Magical place
Visited during my birthday and we loved it! The entire Varenna is magical and beautiful place. Although it was very hot that day we still enjoyed our visit. The gardens are amazing and worth every penny. We also visited museum and really liked it. The garage across villa was full so we parked near train station and loved the nice walk around Varenna.

I've seen many a garden, botanical and otherwise, but this must be the most beautiful of all. The location alone, just above Lake Como with the mountains in the background and the exquisitely landscaped terrain leaves an unforgettable impression. Even the stone wall framing the garden is a work of art. The garden winds it's way along the shore of the lake, offering one outlook more captivating than the other. This is romantic Italy at its finest.

We got there just after it opened which was a good move as when we left, around mid day, there was a long queue to enter. Beautiful grounds, not too formal with stunning lake views. €8 for the garden or €10 for the garden and house (they offer a senior discount for those 65+)

We strolled for about 1:5 hours. There is a cafe.

In the Italian journey, train from Bellano to Varenna (4 minutes and €1.50 per person) for Villa Monastera. We arrive a little early (8:30 a.m. and open at 9:30 a.m.), but the city is deserted and we can take the time to admire the streets and landscapes (not the case at 11:00 a.m.).
10 € for adult entry and 5 for those under 25 for the gardens only (the villa looks like it was seen in Tivoli).
Long stroll through the long alley (1 km) filled with palm trees, lemon trees, roses...
Colors and smells everywhere as well as a 180 degree view of the lake.

Villa of a certain charm overlooking Lake Lecco. Nice garden, shame about the work inc orso that do not allow you to visit it completely. Many foreign tourists and especially many photo shoots. The ticket for the visit of the garden alone costs 7 euros per person. The village (Varenna) is nice, but quite chaotic causes groups. The only big drawback is the parking: impossible to park in the city streets, in front of the Villa entrance there is a private silo where you can 'park for a fee with excessive costs.

Yes, Varenna is very touristy - but after all your a tourist! And once you've had coffee or lunch down by the lake or in the piazza under the church, the Villa Monastero and the Hotel Villa Cipressi gardens are pretty much compulsory. The Villa Monastero garden goes right down to the lake and makes for very pleasant stroll although in truth the plantings aren't outstanding. And of course the villa is closed at the moment. The 200 year-old magnolia tree is worth noting though. And at this time of the year the Wisteria is in full bloom. Definitely a pleasant experience taking a liesurely walk and taking in the views.

Note that we went wound the garden at the end of September, clearly after several flowering plants we past their best.

Find it odd this garden is so highly rated though. Although the structure is beautiful the underplanting is poor and getting dishevelled. Paths made from crazy paving are incomplete and the place has an overall look of being in need for some TLC. Nowhere near as well kept as Villa del Balbianello across the water (although that's very much not a flow garden)

I was with my husband in Varenna and how could I not visit the park of the villa... entry costs €10 per person, then with the visit to the villa it also costs more (I don't remember how much...). There was a bit of a queue at the entrance but let's say it's really worth it! The location is TOP, the routes are varied, uphill and downhill but also on flat ground (all doable for both children and us adults). There are various species of plants, flowers, ... from all over the world. The view of the lake is spectacular, especially seen from the various balconies of the villa! Various statues, disused fountains, benches, pieces of balconies, ... in short, our eyes are dazzled in every way. There are areas with benches, a bar, toilets. Really worth a visit!

Although we were forced to walk through the vast grounds of the Botanical Garden with umbrellas in pouring rain, I was impressed by the well-kept park, which even in the second half of September has lots of colorful flowers and a nice number of different citrus trees. There are also stone statues everywhere, as well as beautiful tiled floors and pretty, twisted columns to admire.
The magnificent mansion, which is included in the entrance fee, is also a must-see (there is also a small cafe and toilets downstairs). An impressive marble staircase leads to the upper floor, where I was particularly impressed by the lavishly equipped, elegant bathroom.
Out of season, you should easily find a free parking space in the relatively large parking garage opposite the entrance.
