The area
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

After researching, the Italian economy seems very differently structured than the USA. I will comment later.
Besides the middle finger, which I personally think is an anti-fascist symbol, (the sculptor will not divulge it’s meaning), the building behind it, according to our tour guide, is the Italian stock exchange. Concerning the bonds trade, Everyone here in the USA talks about China and Japan buying our government bonds and owning our debt.(30%?). It appears, In Italy, the debt is mostly financed in-house, either directly or indirectly by it’s citizens. Also in Italy, fortunately for it, 15% of the economic GDP is driven by the tourism industry. Every time I am in Italy, I can witness the enormous tourism industry. I personally think this has a lot to do with the Euro currently being stronger than the dollar. (1 euro currently converts to around 1.10 dollars?). My tour guide stopped here for awhile and fascism was discussed, especially as it pertained to the giant middle finger, “flicking everybody off. “. Haha.

During the excavations to build this palace in 1928 , the finds of the ancient Roman theater of the first century BC were found, unfortunately they decided to bury them under th palace , ( can be visited from the underground of Turati palace )
The palace is a typically Neoclassical Building with wide and tall columns and several statues at the ground floor and over the top of facade

Designed in 1932 by the architect Paolo Mezzanotte, the building became the seat of the Stock Exchange, replacing the old and inadequate building in Piazza Cordusio. Typically for the era, the impressive facade in white marble is decorated with numerous allegoric figures as a symbol of wealth.

This palace was built in XX century, so it's not so historical. Although the building itself is quite organic. "Mezzanotte" stands for Paolo Mezzanotte, the architect who designed it.

If you are around, it is worth a visit. I like to come here in the evening, when the stock exchange (hosted in the building) closes and the offices around are empty. There's an unnatural calm, considering that it's 3 minutes from Piazza Duomo and the crowded areas of Milan.
But the real "diamond" is the sculpture "L.O.V.E." from Cattelan in the middle of the square. L.O.V.E. is the acronym of Freedom, Hate, Revenge, Eternity (in Italian) and the hand without its finger (except the medium one) represents the fascist salutation. To be considered that Palazzo Mezzanotte is an example of fascist architecture...

We came upon this piazza in Milan completely by accident, but were intrigued and delighted by it. The Palazzo Mezzonotte is an obviously Fascist-era building dominating the piazza. And right in front is a giant hand in an unmistakeably vulgar gesture. Google "finger sculpture Milan" to get the back story. Meantime, enjoy the juxtaposition; it's free.

At the end of a tour of the ancient Cinque Vie district I went so far to review Piazza degli Affari and the buildings that surround it. Among these stands out Palazzo Mezzanotte, which took its name from the architect who built it in the 1930s using travertine and embellishing it with remarkable sculptures by the artists Leone Lodi and Geminiano Cibau.
Monumental, not to say hypertrophic, the palace still possesses its solemn majesty with undoubted architectural and decorative merits, thus well worth a stop to admire the different details.
