In 1801 Napoleon ordered the demolition of the fortifications for Milan's Castello Sforzesco. This left a large space for the piazza Sempione, now a suitable site for a monumental construction to serve as a triumphal entrance to the city. Begun in 1807 in honour of Napoleon, the arch was not finished until 1838 for the occasion of the coronation of Ferdinando I as King of Lombardy-Venetia. The work of neoclassical architect Luigi Cagnola, inspired by Settimo Severo's arch in Rome, the structure features three colossal Corinthian columns with an arch made of granite from Baveno and adorned with marble from Crevola di Ossola. It is surmounted by the famous 'sestiga della pace' -- the work of Abbondio Sangiorio -- and by four statues of victorious men on horseback.

Great Park and Bars close by!

The Arco is not too far away from a huge park and castle which is a pleasant walk in itself. We went for a drink in a bar just opposite the Arco and enjoyed the views and sunshine.

Coming through the Parco Sempione from Castello Sforzesco you arrive at the Arco della Pace. Impressive Arc to visit close up. More great history links this back to Napoleon.

Beautiful arch in a beautiful setting. We learned that the Napoleon had this constructed and had the horses facing France. Some clever Italians who were unimpressed with their new ruler turned the horses around so their behinds would face France. Love it!

An easy walk from the Duomo di Milano. Walk through the Castello di Sforzesco and enjoy Parco Sempione up to the Arco della Pace.

Simple but nice to look at. It's at the edge of the park so you'll see it if walking lots in the park.

It was located inside the Sempione gardens. A nice view and worth taking a few pictures as memories.

This triumphal arch is located on the opposite side of Parco Sempione to the Castllo Sforzesco. I suggest a walk through the park from the castle. Although it is similar to other more important arches from antiquity to modern times, it is worth seeing.

Thank Boris B

Staying in Centro Storico

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.
