Neighbourhood: Santa Croce

Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

Lovely quiet area of the city

We wandered along here one very sunny morning, so lovely and quiet, it is at the side of a small canal with the ponte gaffaro bridge at the end to enable local venetians to cross

LESS CROWDED VENICE

Just a short distance from Piazzale Roma you enter into a more peaceful and tranquil area of Dorsoduro. Across the canal is Sestiere Santa Croce. Fondamenta del Gafaro is lined with homes and a few shops. This is a great area for very evocative photos of the reflections in the canal and of the buildings.

Nice walk

Nice walk in Santa polo section of venice. Less traffic and great to get lost in the side streets of venice .

QUIET SIDE STREET

Fondamenta Gaffaro is a walkway located within sestieri Santa Croce, along side Rio Del Magazen, between Ponte Gaffaro and Ponte de Ca’ Marcello. It is lined with shops, restaurants and apartments. Great photos of this street and the canal can be taken from Fondamenta Minotto.
