As you come through the narrow lanes you are suddenly confronted by the side view of the Basilica and it gives you an inkling of what is yet to come as you make your way to the incredible facade of the Basilica. The main portal, polychrome marble, the gothic tracery and the four bronze horses are only part of the... More

I really enjoyed traveling here although it was a bit touristy in the summer. Must see place when going to Venice overall.

We had booked the night tour and I can't recommend it highly enough. We were very lucky to be a very small group and had the basilica to ourselves. Great guide. Magical experience.

What a special experience to splash around St Marc Sq in over the boot wellies! Apparently it floods quite often, but I had never seen anything like it. We probably enjoyed it a bit too much, especially drinking a coffee in a chair half under water, what a laugh.

The crowds!!! So many people, so much to see. We bought a ticket online while standing in the square and skipped the long line.

Absolutely gorgeous. There will be hordes of people, so be prepared! It was a beautiful sight compared to the rest of Venice.

Free entrance for all. You can access the main church and a praying area. There about three (3), or maybe more, parts that you need to pay to have closer look - like the altar, the relics, etc. Avoid bringing knapsacks to avoid security hassles. No photos allowed inside - but a number do find a way to take photos.... More

The basilica is the perfect example of detailed building art. We enjoyed our time while looking at the beautiful pictures and carvings on the basilica.

Long wait to get in past grumpy security guards Crowded inside - literally trudge along in a slow line looking upwards Meant to be a place of reverence but everyone talks and takes sneaky photos to then be moaned at by said security guards It's an amazing place spoilt by the crowds / ignorant tourists for me I enjoyed Florence... We had a timed entry which avoided the long queue. Beautiful church that you can access all areas even when in service! Worth paying the little extra to see the Palad'oro at the back, marvel at all the gold leaf and gem stones. Must see whilst in Venice, go early or late in the day to avoid the crowds.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
