Amazing mosaics- mostly gold. Incredibly impressive. So weird how the floor is uneven but very interesting. Do make sure you go upstairs and pay the extra few euros to see the bronze horses and for a great view from the roof of st marks square

San Marco cathedral is where the Bones of Saint Mark (Apostle from the Bible) are held, not only that but the Flag of Venice is of the St. Marco Lion depiction of the Apostle. We took a tour of this lovely place and spent some time checking out all the rooms and even the dungeons. Was cheap to get in and could spend as much time as you want to take it all in

Absolutely stunning. The mosaics and gold painted walls are awe-inspiring. Even though Basilica di San Marco isn't very large, it's absolutely worth a visit when you're in visit. Make sure you don't take pictures or you will be yelled at by the security!!

Architecture and artwork are unreal. Wish we could have gone in main part of church. View from above was impressive but not the same. Wish they had a brochure w info about the history, etc. 5 euro fee inside was a surprise.

Typical European cathedral but great to admire the paintings and architecture never the less. Really good for a rainy day and a 'must' on your itinerary

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
