A world away from Venice across the bay

Giudecca is an island ten minutes away from Venice proper but so different. There's a school, gardens and waterside cafes to sip prosecco or down a gelato.

We were staying at the Hilton on Giudecca which was great. While there we took advantage of the opportunity to dine at on Giudecca. Good, inexpensive and uncrowded restaurants are available with great views of Venice.

It is a short ride by Vaporetto from St Mark square. Relatively few people visit this part and hence is quite and peaceful. The area is dotted with charming cafes, and restaurants. There are also old Gothic period churches in this part

We travelled across to Giudecca on the free motor launch provided by Hotel Cipriani...free to public and runs every 15 mins from berth to the right of St Marks square. Hotel is worth a look and staff happy for us to stroll around grounds. Island is quiet and reflective after the hustle and bustle of Venice ...definitely worth a look

It's a short taxi trip but worth it. Great restaurants on the front and the most wonderful view from the roof of The Hilton Skyline Bar.

We love all of Venice and try to visit as many islands as possible while there. La Giudecca is lovely. It has some wonderful restaurants and many hotels. It has more of a local charm which we love. Can't wait until next time!

We stayed in the Starfish Apartments on this lovely island. It is mainly residential therefore quiet in the evenings if that is what you want. Lovely waterside restaurants and very easy to get to and from Piazza San Marco. If you decide to base yourself here I do suggest you get the Venice Transport Pass. Saves a lot of money,... More

Staying in Giudecca

Neighbourhood Profile
Giudecca
Giudecca is a retreat for Venetians away from the crowds. Symbolically, six metal teeth represent Venice’s six sestieri (districts); the seventh, Guidecca, points away from the others – part of Dorsoduro, but separated by the Giudecca Canal. Giudecca evolved from a center of shipyards and factories to a quiet residential area with a sprinkling of restaurants and bars. The majestic harmonious Redentore church stands as thanks for delivering Venice from the plague, hosting an annual heartfelt festival.
