After 4 days of touring palaces, museums, art galleries and churches in Venice we were all Tintoretto'd and Titian'd out. What a nice change to walk through the relaxing galleries of Peggy Guggenheims old home and see some lovely modern art.

Some of the pieces of art displayed here are fascinating and well worth seeing, but the exhibition is a fairly small collection (for the relatively expensive price of entry) and although it's interesting to see it displayed in the collector's former home, the house is not a natural shape or layout for a gallery. There's no clear flow of movement... More

Although I'm not that big a fan of modern art I really enjoyed this place. There are works by lots of modern artists displayed in what was Peggy's home. It's an easy layout & the paintings have a very good description with them. There are sculptures in a garden & you can see where Peggy is laid to rest with... More

Great to visit a museum that is in the actual residence of Peggy Guggenheim, an early supporter and collector of modern art. This is a very personal collection with some of the art actually hung as she planned. The terrace on the canal is fantastic. No reservations required at the time of year we visited - November

The collection here is breathtaking. What makes it more intimate is that you are actually walking through Peggy's own home that she lived in for years. So most of the art work is still in it's original place.

I must admit I am a heathen when it comes to art but I was persuaded by friends to visit. I could not justify the €20 entrance fee and did not think the visit was good value for money. I was more interested in Peggy, herself, an amazing lady but I was 'underwhelmed' at the collection. But as I said... More

At the East end of Dorsoduro is the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. A small collection of thought-provoking modern art that includes Picasso, Dali, and Pollock. If you’re there at the right time, a curator may be giving a lecture on an art period, artist, or style. For example, we stumbled upon a lesson on the history of Cubism. If you are... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
