Having bought several dozen masks from Ca' Macana over the years and having tried painting my own masks at home, I was eager to get some instruction from the masters. I have a background in painting, and so I wanted to find out more about the materials and techniques. My friend and I had a great time and learned a... More

Ca'Macana is a beautiful mask atelier that also runs fantastic mask-making workshops. We reserved a 2 hour private class in advance for 2 kids and 2 adults and - although quite expensive - would do it again in a heart beat. Our instructor, Sarah, was very friendly, warm, knowledgeable, fun and (very) patient with the kids. The boys unanimously voted... More

In a nondescript alley at the Line 1 water bus stop at Ca' Rezziano, this little store and associated workshop provide a memorable experience for kids and adults alike. Choose your mask and paint away under the helpful guidance of the instructor. It's a tad expensive at approx. EUR 50 per person in a public course (~EUR 100 for private),... More

This was a great spot for our family of five with three children ages 10 and 5 yr old twins. The experience of making our own carnival masks was really unique and exciting! The memories made will last a lifetime! The cost for two masks was 44/mask, where you are able to decorate it yourself. The shop workers are very... More

We always love Carnival masks and determine to get some while traveling in Venice. We did the 2-hour private workshop with our two teenage children last week. It was brilliant. You learn about the history of mask-making and the various techniques then decorate two masks of you choice. You get plenty of coaching as you go and it does not require any special skills (at least the techniques you learn in the workshop!). We... More

We went to Ca' Macana with three young kids. We did the drop in class and got there as soon as they opened. No one else was there. My one year old was obviously too young to enjoy the mask making. The 2.5 year old liked it, but got a bit antsy. The 6 year old LOVED this experience! The... More

We went here as a family and chose and made our own masks. We all enjoyed it so much - the staff were helpful and encouraging to the children and we left with super mementos of our visit to Venice in our own style and colourways. Good value at 39 euros each. I thought it a shame that other parents... More

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
